This is an exciting opportunity to play a pivotal role in protecting lives, buildings and communities by ensuring fire suppression products meet the highest standards of safety, quality and performance.

About the Role

As a Senior Test Engineer, you will take responsibility for testing a wide range of fire suppression systems and products against recognised product quality and safety standards, ensuring they are safe, compliant and fit for purpose.

Alongside hands-on testing, you will act as a technical leader within the laboratory environment, supporting project delivery, reviewing standards, developing procedures and helping to grow the capability of the wider team. This role offers a meaningful blend of engineering excellence, leadership, mentoring and project responsibility.

We welcome candidates from diverse technical backgrounds and career journeys, whether you’ve developed through formal qualifications, hands-on industry experience, or a combination of both.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out product evaluation and testing for safety, performance, efficiency and fitness for purpose
  • Produce clear, accurate and high-quality technical test reports
  • Lead or support project delivery, including quotation work and client liaison
  • Act as a technical expert in reviewing standards and developing testing procedures
  • Train, mentor and support the development of colleagues across the laboratory
  • Deputise for the Team Manager when required
  • Perform internal audits across laboratories
  • Build positive, professional relationships with clients and stakeholders
  • Liaise with calibration teams to ensure correct equipment use and maintenance
  • Ensure compliance with ISO 17025, quality systems and legislative requirements
  • Maintain excellent laboratory standards, housekeeping and data management
  • Proactively identify, report and escalate risks to quality, safety or performance

What We’re Looking For

  • HNC/HND qualification in a relevant engineering or technical discipline or equivalent industry experience
  • Experience working in a product testing, laboratory or technical engineering environment would be beneficial
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Confidence in producing clear, structured technical reports
  • Good IT skills (MS Office or equivalent)
  • Excellent organisation, accuracy and attention to detail
  • Experience supporting, mentoring or developing others
  • A collaborative, inclusive working style and a commitment to quality and safety

We recognise that people develop skills in different ways so if you meet most of the criteria and feel excited by the role, we encourage you to apply.

Why Join BSI?

  • Be part of a global organisation with 125 years of trust, credibility and impact
  • Work on products that directly contribute to public safety and protection
  • Combine hands-on engineering with leadership and development opportunities
  • Access structured training, professional development and career progression pathways
  • Join a supportive, inclusive and values-driven culture
  • Real opportunity to grow into future technical leadership, laboratory management and specialist roles

BSI offers a competitive total reward package, an independent and varied job in an international environment, flexible working hours, ongoing training, and development with the inclusion of Annual Bonus, Contribution Based Pension, Private Healthcare, 27 Days Annual Leave + Bank Holidays, Income Protection & Life Assurance.
