As we continue to expand our global footprint, including our rapidly growing London engineering hub, we’re looking for a seasoned Staff Software Engineer who thrives on solving complex problems and driving large-scale technical initiatives.
Role OverviewAs a Staff Software Engineer at Tipalti, you will serve as a senior technical leader within the organisation—shaping the architecture, engineering standards, and long-term technical vision of your domain. You will lead high-impact initiatives across services and teams, mentor engineers, and partner with product and business stakeholders to deliver scalable, robust, and secure systems.
This is a deep technical role with broad organisational influence. You will operate with autonomy, set direction, and raise the bar for engineering excellence.
What You’ll DoTechnical Leadership & Architecture- Define and drive the technical strategy for complex, multi-service systems in a high-scale, fintech environment.
- Lead architectural design reviews, championing best-in-class patterns for reliability, observability, scalability, and security.
- Evaluate and introduce new technologies, tooling, and frameworks that accelerate engineering productivity and platform robustness.
- Own end-to-end delivery of high-impact initiatives—from problem definition and design to rollout, adoption, and maintenance.
- Debug and solve the most challenging technical problems across the stack, often involving distributed systems, data pipelines, payments orchestration, or compliance workflows.
- Ensure systems meet stringent performance, accuracy, and regulatory requirements in a global payments environment.
- Partner closely with Product, Architecture, Security, and other Engineering teams to align business goals with scalable technical solutions.
- Influence roadmaps and prioritisation across multiple teams and lead consensus around complex trade-offs.
- Coach, mentor, and elevate senior engineers, helping them grow into key technical contributors.
- Exemplify Tipalti’s engineering values: ownership, integrity, high quality, and customer impact.
- Promote engineering excellence through code reviews, RFCs, design guidelines, and technical standardisation.
- 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, with substantial experience building and scaling distributed systems.
- Demonstrated success as a Staff Engineer or equivalent technical leadership role.
- Deep proficiency in one or more backend languages (e.g., Java, Kotlin, C#, Go, or similar).
- Strong architectural instincts, especially in designing resilient cloud-based microservices.
- Expertise in data modelling, storage systems, event-driven architectures, and high-throughput transactional systems.
- Ability to navigate ambiguity, make sound technical decisions, and influence without authority.
- Experience in fintech, payments, ERP integrations, risk/fraud systems, financial compliance, or similar regulated domains.
- Familiarity with AWS, Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines, cloud security practices, and observability tooling.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, comfortable writing RFCs and presenting architectural proposals.
- Track record of leading long-term technical initiatives across multiple engineering teams.
