The Role
At Block, Senior DevOps Engineers in the Corporate System Engineering team play a critical role in driving the scalability, reliability, and security of our corporate infrastructure. As an L6 engineer, you will lead the design, implementation, and optimization of both on-premise and cloud-based (AWS) systems, ensuring they meet the highest standards of durability, availability, and performance. This senior position is ideal for an experienced engineer passionate about infrastructure automation, incident response, mentorship, and driving impactful improvements across large-scale environments.
In this role, you will own the end-to-end management of infrastructure automation and scaling, collaborate across teams to implement security and operational best practices, and mentor junior engineers as part of your leadership responsibilities.
You Will

  • Lead the design, implementation, and scaling of infrastructure for corporate systems and applications (on-prem and AWS).
  • Build and manage infrastructure as code (IaC) using tools like Terraform to ensure repeatability, scalability, and secure management of corporate systems.
  • Build automation tools to detect, remediate, and prevent security threats while minimizing the risk of reliability-related failures, focusing on durability, availability, and performance.
  • Lead security improvement projects and handle security incidents in an organized, effective manner.
  • Collaborate across multiple teams, including IT Support, Production Platform Engineering, Hardware Engineering, and Information Security, to ensure system security, availability, and efficiency.
  • Build automation to streamline capacity planning, provisioning, configuration management, and scaling of infrastructure.
  • Own the design of scalable solutions to optimize infrastructure health, efficiency, and performance through advanced monitoring, logging, and alerting systems.
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior engineers while driving cross-team collaboration and project leadership.
  • Perform periodic on-call duties, ensuring the security, availability, and efficiency of Block's corporate services.
  • Lead high-impact infrastructure projects that shape the future of Block's internal systems.
  • Drive improvements in cloud architecture, network security, and automation tooling.
  • Mentor and work alongside talented engineers across Block to improve operational excellence.
  • Shape the infrastructure strategy at Block, influencing the design and architecture of mission-critical systems.
  • Be at the forefront of infrastructure innovation at Block, solving complex technical challenges at scale


You Have

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 6+ years of industry experience architecting, developing, and troubleshooting large-scale infrastructure, with a proven track record in infrastructure reliability and scalability.
  • 4+ years of experience in at least one of the following programming languages: Python, Go, Ruby.
  • Strong system and network debugging skills, with advanced knowledge of TCP/IP networking and application-level security.
  • Experience with management/automation tools such as SaltStack, Terraform, or similar.
  • Proven experience leading cross-team technical projects and driving security and reliability improvements.
  • Strong understanding of cloud environments, particularly AWS, as well as hybrid infrastructure solutions.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Experience with hybrid infrastructure environments (on-premise and cloud).
  • Strong understanding of container orchestration (e.g., Kubernetes, Docker).
  • Knowledge of security compliance frameworks such as PCI DSS, SOC2.
  • Experience contributing to open-source projects and automation libraries.
  • Hands-on experience with large-scale data center or distributed system operations

Block takes a market-based approach to pay, and pay may vary depending on your location. U.S. locations are categorized into one of four zones based on a cost of labor index for that geographic area. The successful candidate's starting pay will be determined based on job-related skills, experience, qualifications, work location, and market conditions. These ranges may be modified in the future.
