Introduction to the Team

Expedia Product & Technology builds innovative products, services, and tools to deliver high-quality experiences for travelers, partners, and our employees. As a Software Engineer working on an industry-leading Data Platform, you will collaborate with other experienced software engineers to drive improvements to our technology, design and develop new services and software solutions, and build and track metrics to ensure high-quality results. You will have the chance to work with business partners and leaders to influence and drive product vision and lead the design of our systems.

We love contributing our work to open-source communities and have successfully done so with tools like Circus Train, Waggle Dance and Beekeeper. Recently, we added Hive support to Apache Iceberg.

What you will do:

  • Write clear, efficient, well-tested code and evolve development standards and design patterns.
  • Be part of an agile team that is continuously learning and improving.
  • Work independently, build rapport with other engineering teams and take architectural ownership of critical systems.
  • Develop scalable and highly performant distributed systems with everything this entails (availability, monitoring, resiliency).
  • Help us shape the future of Data Lakes.
  • Communicate and document solutions and design decisions.

Who you are:

  • You have core and server-side Java programming (Spring, concurrency, streams, lambdas) and knowledge of Linux/Python (bash scripting, grep, sed, awk).
  • You have good knowledge of the Hadoop ecosystem (Spark, Hadoop, Hive) and experience with Kafka (Spark Streaming, Flink).
  • You have strong experience with cloud computing platforms (AWS, EMR, S3, Kubernetes, Docker) and experience with infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, Helm).
  • You have experience with microservice architecture and design, with an eye towards scalability tuning, algorithms and computational complexity.
  • You have experience working with Agile methodologies (Scrum, code reviews, pair programming).
  • You’re passionate about open source!
