About our Team

This Senior Publisher position sits within the Materials Science team, which is part of the Physical Sciences group at Elsevier. In this role, you will maintain, develop, and take complete publishing responsibility for a defined list of journals in the field of Materials Science.

About the Role
 

The successful candidate will need to balance scientific knowledge with proven entrepreneurial and networking skills. They should also have a keen interest in new developments and changes in the publishing industry, especially as they pertain to Materials Science and Engineering more broadly. You will need to demonstrate the ability to work independently whilst also contributing to team initiatives and supporting fellow team members with assistance and advice as necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Developing the strategy for the portfolio, in collaboration with the Journals’ external editorial teams and society partners; ensure alignment with the department and wider organization’s strategies.

  • Working with Editors, Authors, Editorial boards, Reviewers, and the academic community at large to ensure sufficient copy flow of relevant, high-quality manuscripts in Materials Science.

  • Negotiating and managing contractual relationships with journal editors and learned societies.

  • Continuous and proactive maintenance of the existing portfolio, reflecting developments in the external marketplace.

  • Meeting portfolio-related objectives with regards to content growth, market share, editorial speeds, and author and editor satisfaction.

  • Managing the editorial fees budget and provide input to pricing processes.

Requirements

  • University Degree - essential.

  • Minimum of 5 (five) years journal publishing experience or equivalent relevant industry or postdoctoral experience in Materials Science – desirable.

  • Fluent English speaker – essential.

  • Proactive, positive, and creative.

  • Solution- and results-oriented.

  • Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written).

  • Strong networking, negotiation, and collaboration skills.

  • Commercial awareness and business acumen.

  • Experience in data gathering, interpretation, and presentation.

  • Understanding of the scientific research ecosystem and its needs, particularly in Materials Science.

  • Willingness to travel internationally.
