About Beam Benefits
Beam was founded in 2012 by three engineers who saw the opportunity to modernise the dental benefits industry using technology. The first product was the Beam Brush, which was one of the earliest examples of the Internet of Things in healthcare.
Today, Beam Benefits is available in 40+ states and has expanded beyond dental. Beam is now simplifying and modernising a robust suite of ancillary employee benefits through an intuitive digital platform, self-service tools, AI-powered pricing, support from Beam’s helpful representatives. This winning combination allows us to deliver a simple, smart, and wellness-focused experience for brokers, employers, and members.
We operate in a regulated environment where speed, reliability, and correctness must coexist.
As we scale, AI is foundational to how we build.

We're looking for a Senior Platform Engineer to contribute to the evolution and maturation of our production platform and developer experience. This role sits at the intersection of software engineering and platform architecture, with a focus on building and maintaining systems that enable other engineers to move faster, more safely, and with less cognitive load.
This is a technical, hands-on role with growing ownership and responsibility. You will contribute to implementing forward-looking improvements and champion robust procedures to ensure the platform evolves strategically and reliably. AI will be a key component of the platform's future, helping identify opportunities for automation, eliminating repetitive work, and enabling engineers to move quickly and confidently. At this level, you're expected to own your domain. That means making sound technical decisions independently, knowing when to escalate, and driving work to completion without close oversight.
What You’ll Work On
- Orchestrate agentic and generative AI to drive platform development, operations, and growth, using AI to move faster without sacrificing system integrity, data standards, or compliance posture.
- Collaborate with application teams to identify pain points and bottlenecks in workflows and implement solutions that streamline the developer experience.
- Design, implement, and maintain platform infrastructure that ensures high availability, predictable performance, and operational correctness, while balancing reliability, cost, and simplicity.
- Hands-on implementation and maintenance of platform and infrastructure changes, spanning architecture to deployment, in alignment with established technical standards and direction.
- Actively participate in design and architectural discussions for platform systems, ensuring scalability, maintainability, and alignment with business goals, including authoring design notes for non-trivial features.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of platform processes and developer experience, fostering innovation and adoption of effective tooling.
- Perform well under pressure in incidents, escalations, and production issues, helping the team meet its commitments reliably.
Who We’re Looking For
- 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, with a track record of delivering high-quality, maintainable, and scalable software.
- Strong proficiency in full-stack or backend systems, with experience in modern web applications such as Ruby and React/TypeScript.
- Experience contributing to the design and implementation of scalable, high-performance architectures, internal platforms, or developer tooling.
- Experience with AWS core services and containerised workloads (ECS/EKS, Lambda, RDS, S3, etc.) and cloud infrastructure best practices.
- Experience identifying and applying AI or automation opportunities across the platform to improve efficiency, reliability, and developer experience, while thoughtfully evaluating trade-offs and maintaining system integrity.
- Excellent problem-solving skills, with a focus on practical execution and reliability.
- Strong communication skills, capable of participating in technical discussions and collaborating on platform strategy.
- Familiarity with modern engineering practices, agile methodologies, and CI/CD pipelines.
- Track record of mentoring earlier-career engineers on craft and judgment, and creating space for honest critique in code and design review.
- Models rigorous review practices that cover logic and context, not just final output, including prompt and diff in AI-assisted work.
We value engineers who demonstrate GRIT: Growth, Resilience, Impact, and Teamwork. At Senior level, this means leading features end-to-end, elevating those around you, and using AI to move faster without compromising quality or compliance. We call this 'orchestrate with rigour'.
