About the Role:
As the Senior Legal Counsel at payabl., you will play a critical role in navigating the evolving legal and regulatory landscape of global financial services, ensuring the company’s operations remain compliant while supporting its ambitious growth objectives.

Reporting to the Lead Legal Counsel, this UK-based role will act as a key legal advisor, safeguarding payabl. against legal risks, shaping legal strategy, and enabling business success through sound legal counsel. Your expertise in fintech, payments, and international law will be instrumental in driving our global expansion while ensuring compliance with all relevant UK legal frameworks.

Key responsibilities:  

  • Provide expert legal counsel on business transactions, including acquisitions, divestitures, corporate agreements, and regulatory compliance matters.
  • Navigate complex UK and international regulatory frameworks, particularly within fintech and payments, ensuring compliance with FCA regulations, UK laws, and global financial directives. Identify and mitigate potential legal risks while fostering a proactive legal culture within the company.
  • Support corporate governance matters, assisting in organizing board meetings, maintaining corporate registers, and ensuring adherence to governance best practices.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate key contractual arrangements with merchants, payment partners, and PSPs, optimizing agreements for scalability and market positioning. Assess client-provided legal opinions and advise on a range of legal matters, including employment law, intellectual property, and data protection (GDPR).
  • Work closely with internal stakeholders across business units, providing strategic legal support in operational and decision-making processes. Engage with external legal advisors to address specialized legal issues.
  • Support legal proceedings, dispute resolution, and regulatory matters, ensuring the company's interests are protected.
  • Work closely with the legal team, contributing to a high-performing legal function by fostering collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and operational excellence.

Who You Are:

You are a highly experienced legal professional with deep expertise in fintech, payment services, and financial regulation. A strategic thinker with a strong regulatory mindset, you excel at navigating complex legal landscapes and ensuring compliance in a fast-moving industry. You thrive in high-stakes environments, balancing legal risk with business objectives while building strong relationships with regulators and stakeholders.

  • Fintech & Financial Regulation Expert – You have extensive experience advising on legal and regulatory matters within fintech, payments, or financial services.
  • Legally Qualified & Well-Versed in UK Regulations – You hold a Bachelor’s degree in Law (LLB) and are qualified to practice law in the UK. A Master’s in Law or Business Law is a plus. You have in-depth knowledge of UK legal frameworks, FCA regulations, and financial services laws.
  • Regulatory Navigator – You’re adept at handling interactions with regulatory bodies like the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), ensuring compliance while supporting business growth.
  • Sharp Negotiator & Influencer – You possess exceptional negotiation and stakeholder management skills, influencing key decision-makers and fostering strong partnerships with regulators and business leaders.
  • Business-Minded Legal Advisor – You understand the commercial impact of legal decisions and provide practical, solution-oriented guidance in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Problem-Solver Under Pressure – You thrive in high-intensity situations, managing multiple legal matters with precision, adaptability, and strategic foresight.

Step 1: Initial Interview – A 30-40 min conversation with our Talent Acquisition team to explore your experience and career goals.

Step 2: In-Depth Discussion – A 60-minute deep dive with the Hiring Manager, the Lead Legal Counsel, to assess your skills and alignment with the role.

Step 3: Final Behavioral Interview – A team-fit interview, with participation from the Head of Talent Acquisition and the Group Chief Corporate Officer.
