Job Title: Senior Java Developer
Location: London
Department: Technology
6 Month FTC

Department overview:

The core development team is made up of 10 developers. All are working full-time on the transition from a proprietary trade management system (Calypso) to a newly-built one.

Role overview:

The project went live in 2024 and completed the migration of all electronic trade flow. The current stage of the project is focussing on:

-    Migrating all live trades and positions from the legacy system to the new one
-    Building an on-demand-liquidation position reporting system using Vertica
-    Building a trade reporting system using Mongo
-    Performance tuning of Kafka and the various microservices to ensure we can support all projected trading volumes as well as market shocks

The team decides its own priorities based on the overall project delivery plan. We meet each morning to provide an update and collaborate with each other and with other teams across the organisation. The team is easy-going and copes well with vague and constantly changing requirements.

Experience required:

  • Financial Services: An understanding of different product types across Capital Markets is critical. The ideal candidate would have experience in a buy or sell-side firm and would understand different asset classes.
  • Java: Very strong Java skills, we currently use V17.
  • Spring: Ideally Spring Boot 3.
  • Database: Ideally Vertica, but a strong background in document or relational databases would be accepted.
  • Microservices/ Container: Demonstrable experience on either on-prem or cloud-based orchestration platforms.

Optional / Ideal Experience:

  • Kafka: Demonstrable experience working on a system at scale. The core of our system is based on Kafka, so experience with that, or other event-driven technologies would be highly beneficial.
  • Kubernetes: Experience with managing orchestration of large microservice-based systems.

About you:

  • You are a self-starter who doesn’t ask for work to do but instead finds the most pressing thing to do and just confirms the direction with the team.
  • You collaborate well with people of all experience and abilities. You want to share knowledge with those that don’t have it and learn from those that do.
  • You will participate in all design discussions and contribute as much as you want to.
  • You have high standards and help encourage others to follow them, but are mindful of the value of fast delivery.
  • You’re not afraid to break things and want to work somewhere that rewards delivery instead of punishing mistakes.
  • You want to engage directly with people across the organisation, from Technology Infrastructure through to Front Office.

BlueCrest is committed to providing an inclusive environment for its workforce. As an employer, we provide equal opportunities to all people regardless of their gender, marital or civil partnership status, race, religion or ethnicity, disability, age, sexual orientation or nationality.
