Caffeine.ai is building the platform for self-writing apps — where natural language produces full-stack, production-ready applications deployed to the Internet Computer, an open sovereign cloud. What sets Caffeine apart is the infrastructure beneath it. While other self-writing platforms build on traditional stacks, Caffeine runs on a different foundation — one where apps are tamperproof by design, data is guaranteed safe on every update, and backend code is written in Motoko, a language built specifically for AI code generation. As a Backend-Focused Full Stack Engineer at caffeine.ai, you will architect the systems and APIs that power the creation of AI-generated applications. You’ll craft scalable, secure, and performant services in Node.js and TypeScript, while diving into our React front-end when needed. This is a hands-on, full-stack role with a backend emphasis — ideal for engineers who love system design, move fast, and care deeply about infrastructure stability and product quality.
- Build Scalable Systems: Develop and refine the core caffeine.ai service architecture using Node.js, TypeScript, and modern database technologies. You’ll design the engines that handle code generation, deployment, and on-chain interactions.
- Collaborate Across the Stack: Work closely with front-end engineers to design robust APIs, optimize data delivery, and ensure type safety from the database to the UI. You’ll contribute to React codebases to unblock features and ensure end-to-end functionality.
- Own Features End-to-End: Drive complex backend features from concept through deployment. You’ll partner with product, design, and AI teams to prototype new capabilities, iterate on data models, and ship quickly while maintaining high standards of reliability.
- Champion Reliability and Scale: Optimize database queries, handle high-concurrency scenarios, and ensure system resilience. You’ll define and monitor backend performance metrics and lead efforts to continuously improve throughput and latency.
- Instrument, Test, and Learn: Implement comprehensive logging, tracing, and monitoring to understand system behavior and debug issues in real-time. You’ll build with observability in mind — using tools like Datadog, open telemetry, and rigorous integration testing.
- Shape the Product Architecture: Bring technical foresight into product discussions and roadmap planning. You’ll help define how our infrastructure evolves to support "AI-native" software generation.
- You have 7+ years of experience building production web applications and distributed systems.
- You are proficient in Node.js, TypeScript, and modern backend ecosystems (SQL/NoSQL).
- You are comfortable working across the stack, especially effectively with React and front-end state.
- You have a strong sense for API design, system architecture, and security.
- You thrive in fast-moving, high-ownership environments.
- You care about code quality, but you also ship — balancing pragmatism with excellence.
- You’re curious about AI-driven development and decentralized web technologies.
- Experience with PostgreSQL, Redis, and event-driven architectures.
- Familiarity with containerization (Docker/Kubernetes) and cloud infrastructure (AWS/GCP).
- Experience building developer tools or platforms.
