The Senior Engineer - Architect role is a critical technical leader responsible for architecting, developing, and scaling platforms that enhance developer workflows and operational efficiencies.
With expertise in GitLab, Backstage, architecture, golden paths, DX portals, and fostering large-scale adoption, this role emphasizes creating developer-centric solutions that drive innovation, efficiency, and measurable business outcomes.
You will: - Design scalable, resilient, and cost-optimized architectures for platform engineering using tools like GitLab and Backstage, ensuring seamless integrations across global teams. Develop golden paths, plugins, and DX portals to transform developer workflows and promote ease of use.
Core Responsibilities
1. Architecture Design and Implementation
• Architect enterprise-grade platforms utilizing GitLab for CI/CD pipelines and Backstage as the central developer portal.• Define modular architectures for scalable and resilient infrastructure components that support Ericsson's global teams.• Incorporate multi-cloud or hybrid cloud strategies with tools like Kubernetes and Terraform to meet scaling and reliability requirements.
2. DX Portals and Plugin Development• Develop and optimize DX portals, offering centralized developer resources, software catalog management, and intuitive workflows.• Create powerful plugins tailored to Ericsson's development needs, such as CI/CD tracking, monitoring, testing, and integration tools.• Continuously enhance portal usability and functionality to reduce cognitive load, improve satisfaction, and ensure adoption across teams globally.
3. Golden Path Creation and Governance• Standardize "golden paths" best-practice workflows for deployment, security compliance, and testing that align with Ericsson's developer needs and governance standards.• Collaborate with stakeholders, including platform democracy groups and engineering teams, to ensure golden paths are practical, scalable, and widely adopted.• Document and promote usage of standardized workflows to support consistent high-quality software development.
4. Large-Scale Platform Adoption• Design scalable adoption strategies for platforms, targeting widespread developer engagement through training, documentation, and onboarding frameworks.• Conduct data-driven evaluations of adoption rates, time-to-value, and onboarding success for platform toolsets like GitLab and Backstage.• Lead efforts to remove adoption blockers while ensuring global accessibility and localized user satisfaction.
5. Team Collaboration and Leadership• Collaborate across departments, including DevOps, SREs, and governance teams, to shape aligned strategies and successful implementations.• Guide global engineering teams on effective platform adoption, user governance, and efficient workflows.• Champion developer-first principles that balance ease of use with operational scalability, integrating feedback from diverse user groups.
6. Proactive Optimization and Monitoring• Monitor performance metrics, such as pipeline throughput, error rates, and infrastructure utilization, using tools like Prometheus, Grafana, and AWS CloudWatch.• Optimize infrastructure for both cost efficiency and operational performance, leveraging Terraform and automated scaling solutions.• Build reliability and self-healing configurations for consistent uptime and fast error recovery.
The skills You Bring
Experience• 5+ years of impactful experience designing platforms and scaling enterprise-grade developer ecosystems.• Proven success driving adoption of GitLab CI/CD pipelines, Backstage portals, and large-scale platform solutions across distributed teams.
Technical Mastery• Advanced knowledge of GitLab configurations, CI/CD automation, repository management, and pipeline optimizations.• Expertise with Backstage maintenance, plugin development, catalog updates, and optimization for user-centric workflows.• Proficiency in cloud ecosystems like AWS, hybrid cloud architecture strategies, and Kubernetes/Terraform-based infrastructure scaling.
Leadership• Track record of mentoring engineers, fostering collaboration across technical and governance teams, and driving initiatives that balance technical and strategic priorities.• Ability to lead discussions on adoption strategies, platform expansion, and governance model alignment.
