We are seeking a highly experienced and skilled Senior Employment Lawyer to join the Group Legal Team working within a regulated financial services organisation. The ideal candidate will be required to be an expert in employment law, who can support complex employment matters, advise senior management and manage tribunal and court proceedings.

 

This role involves close collaboration with senior management, working closely with the Group HR Director and HR representatives within the businesses and leading on all legal aspects in relation to advising on employment law matters and associated legal issues. The ideal candidate will be a strategic thinker with a proven track record in employment law and cases involving both contentious and non-contentious issues. 

Job Responsibilities

  • Provide expert legal advice on a broad range of employment matters, including discrimination, unfair dismissal, TUPE, redundancy, restrictive covenants and other HR related issues.
  • Manage employment litigation, tribunals, mediation and other dispute resolution forums.
  • Advise on complex employee relations issues, including disciplinary actions, grievances and workplace investigations.
  • Provide training and guidance to HR, the businesses and operational teams on employment law updates, policy changes and associated regulatory developments, assessing their impact and recommending best practices.
  • Partner with the HR and Compliance teams to design, review, update and implement employment policies and practices, staff handbooks that align with business objectives and legal requirements.
  • Draft, review and negotiate employment contracts, severance agreements, settlement agreements, consultant agreement and other employment related documentation.
  • Prepare legal briefings, reports and presentations for the Group General Counsel and other stakeholders as required.
  • Oversee / monitor more junior members of the team (as appropriate) and willingness to take on line management responsibilities.
  • Support the Group General Counsel in developing and executing departmental strategies, and a centralised employment legal support framework.
  • Horizon scanning of employment law and regulations, advise senior stakeholders on legal and regulatory changes, assessing potential business impacts and recommended actions.
  • Act as the main point of contact for external law firms handing employment related matters and disputes, overseeing case strategy and managing costs.
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills and the ability to explain complex legal concepts in jargon free language.
  • Foster a culture of compliance and ethical behaviour across the organisation.

Job Requirements

  • Legal qualification: 5 + yrs PQE with employment law experience working within or for a regulated financial services organisation
  • In house experience is desirable but not compulsory
  • A well rounded and highly regarded employment law specialist, with experience ideally gained in a leading law firm or in house role within a large, complex organisation.
  • First rate academic credentials, demonstrable intellectual abilities and an excellent career track record to date.
  • Ability to think strategically and creatively see legal issues in their wider context and advise accordingly.
  • Forward looking approach to employment legal risk management.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, strong organisational skills and judgement, excellent analysis, drafting and negotiation skills.
  • Self-motivated to drive delivery against objectives and an ability to work autonomously and manage own caseload effectively.
  • Strong relationship management skills, with experience co-ordinating with HR leadership and building collaborative and adaptive relationships with internal stakeholders, identifying areas of improvement in relation to employment law and regulation, policies, procedures and standards.
  • Experience withing a regulated environment and working closely with HR and Compliance colleagues on a wide range of issues.
  • Accustomed to operating in a high paced environment and with a successful track record of aligning legal priorities and business goals.
  • An ability to provide incisive and proactive advice and sound legal judgement.
