About the Role:

We are seeking a highly experienced Senior Data & BI Engineer to join the Technology Transformation Team within the Data Office. This role plays a critical part in supporting the AVP – BI/Reporting to shape, improve, and execute the BI delivery strategy in alignment with RenRe’s Data Strategy.

The successful candidate will be responsible for architecting, building, and optimizing BI solutions, ensuring high performance, reliability, and scalability. They will guide BI and data engineers embedded across multiple business domains, providing architectural oversight, enforcing engineering standards, and ensuring consistent delivery of best‑in-class analytics capabilities. Expertise in BI tools such as Tableau and PowerBI will be essential in optimizing data models, dashboards, and reports.

The role requires close collaboration with platform, enterprise architecture and business stakeholders, translating complex business needs into technical designs. The ideal candidate combines strong technical depth with leadership qualities, communication excellence, and a proven ability to influence engineering culture and outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

Business Intelligence & Analytics

  • Design and deliver enterprise BI solutions, including dashboards, reporting layers and reusable datasets.

  • Partner with the AVP – BI/Reporting to ensure data quality, reliability, and performance across all BI and reporting solutions, including developing best‑practice guidelines and supporting the BI engineering team in their adoption across the business.

  • Drive adoption of self-service analytics by ensuring consistent use of existing data products and identifying potential new data products.

  • Partner with business teams to translate requirements into efficient, user‑friendly reporting solutions.

  • Develop and optimize data models to support analytics, reporting, and self‑service BI.

Technical Excellence & Guidance

  • Support the AVP – BI/Reporting on driving technical excellence and resolving complex BI data issues.

  • Provide guidance, code reviews, and architecture/design reviews, offering technical direction to junior and mid‑level data engineers.

  • Support junior engineers’ development through coaching, pairing, and knowledge‑sharing sessions.

  • Champion engineering excellence through documentation, process optimisation, DevOps practices, CI/CD, and automation.

Cross‑Functional Collaboration

  • Work with AVP – BI/Reporting to partner with Data Strategy, Enterprise Architecture, Product, Analytics, and Business teams to align BI delivery with strategic goals.

  • Act as a technical advisor and point of escalation for complex data and BI challenges across the organisation.

  • Advocate for scalable, forward‑thinking, future‑proof designs that increase analytical maturity and reduce time‑to‑insights.

  • Contribute to long-term data and BI platform direction through architectural input and technical recommendations.

Qualifications

Technical Skills

  • Extensive experience in modern cloud‑based data engineering technologies such as DBT, Snowflake, Dremio, BigQuery, or equivalent.

  • Strong SQL skills, analytical modelling, performance tuning, and designing enterprise BI datasets.

  • Strong programming experience in Python or similar languages, with emphasis on pipeline automation, testing, and data processing.

  • Expert proficiency with leading BI platforms such as Power BI, Tableau, ThoughtSpot, Looker, including semantic models, DAX/MDX, and performance optimisation.

  • Experience integrating BI and data engineering with DevOps, CI/CD, and versioning practices is highly desirable.

  • Knowledge of data governance, security, and lifecycle management.

Professional Skills

  • Proven ability to coach, mentor and guide an engineering team.

  • Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills, capable of translating between business and technical contexts.

  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities, operate in fast‑paced environments, and deliver high‑quality outcomes.

  • Strategic thinker with the ability to shape platforms, processes, and long-term BI capabilities.

  • High level of ownership, autonomy, and accountability.
