We are seeking an enthusiastic and target-driven Senior Communications Manager to co-ordinate and deliver outstanding communications for Frontiers in Science: our flagship, multidisciplinary, open-access journal focused on transformational science to accelerate solutions for healthy lives on a healthy planet. Leading and supported by a small team of communications experts, you will also oversee communications for the Frontiers Forum, which is another of our key strategic initiatives.

The role sits within our Marketing and Communications department and acts as the primary point of contact for editorial teams, authors, and key stakeholders. You will report directly to the Head of Communications.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced communications professional who is passionate about science and has the skills to effectively reach, engage, and connect audiences across science, policy, industry, and the general public.

The ideal candidate will have excellent project management, copywriting, and presentation skills; experience in corporate and science communications; a good understanding of digital media and tools; and the ability to work in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment within matrix team structures.

Key responsibilities:

  • Develop, plan and deliver the short, medium, and long-term communications vision, and subsequent communications plans, to support the visibility, brand perception, and strategic development of Frontiers in Science and the Frontiers Forum.

  • Create engaging, high-quality content - including press releases and scientific explainers - for promoting scientific articles in Frontiers in Science to strategic audiences, ensuring scientific accuracy and brand adherence.

  • Commission and co-ordinate the production of related assets, including videos and infographics, providing creative direction, scripts and scientific oversight.

  • Create compelling promotional materials to attract high-profile authors and speakers to the two strategic initiatives, including web copy, presentation slides, and brochures.

  • Oversee large-scale communication campaigns across multiple external and internal channels – including microsites, email, press, social and other digital media, and at events to meet objectives and support business growth.

  • Design and document timelines and efficient workflows between internal and external teams for timely execution of all content and campaigns.

  • Develop new communications initiatives by recognizing growth and development opportunities informed by competitor and market analyses.

  • Track and analyze campaign metrics and report on KPIs, providing recommendations for continual campaign optimization and improvements to processes.

  • Line manage a team of communication specialists; responsible for defining team roles, hiring team members, and setting up the appropriate team structures.

  • Monitor team performance and professional development, setting objectives, and conducting annual performance reviews.

  • Lead weekly team meetings and planning.

  • Oversee budgets and manage vendor contracts

Qualifications and experience:

Essential

  • Bachelor’s Degree in science; Master’s Degree or equivalent research experience is an asset.

  • At least eight years’ experience in communications, marketing, journalism, public relations, or a related area; science communications or science journalism is a strong asset.

  • Native-level English speaker.

  • Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills, with the ability to comprehend complex, scientific topics and translate them into understandable content for different audiences.

  • A track record of developing communication strategies and running successful communications campaigns.

  • Solid understanding of project management principles.

  • Ability to analyze data and produce clear and concise presentations and reports.

  • Strategic solution provider as well as operational enabler.

  • Obsession with quality and accuracy.

  • Curious and willing to explore new concepts.

  • Able to work independently and proactively, but also a collaborative team player who works well with multi-functional groups.

  • Performance-driven and comfortable with working in a dynamic global environment with tight deadlines and shifting priorities.

Desirable

  • Experience with social and other digital media, digital collaboration tools, analytics tools, and content management systems.

  • Basic knowledge of SEO best practices and content marketing.

  • Experience coordinating projects across different teams, functions, and seniority levels.

  • Experience working with colleagues and direct reports in different locations.
