The Reserving Actuary is responsible for supporting the delivery and continuous development of the reserving function for Markel International, providing technical expertise, leadership and insight to ensure robust reserving, financial reporting and risk management outcomes across the business.

The opportunity:

We are a team of 32 that provide actuarial support to the international organisation, covering multiple geographical locations. The team is mainly based in London but can operate remotely or at other offices. We interact with almost all of the other departments based in London as well as colleagues in the US and in other worldwide locations. We travel as necessary, particularly for office visits and conferences (both internally and externally).

 

What you’ll be doing:

  • Meaningful contribution to the efficient running of the reserving function for Markel International. Assisting in coordinating the activities of the wider department to ensure all reserving and financial reporting activities are carried out on time and to a high standard.
  • Developing the technical approaches for reserving within International and working with the global actuarial operations team and global head of reserving to help develop new tools and techniques and suggesting new methods of operation within International and also globally.
  • Maintain effective relationships with key stakeholders within the wider reserving and reporting universe. Particularly group actuarial, International Finance, International ExCo, auditors and regulators.
  • Lead reserving team members and provide wider coaching and training to the broader actuarial team.
  • Provide support to the wider Markel International Actuarial team, and get involved in global actuarial projects as appropriate.

 

Our must-haves:

  • Bring reserving expertise into the International actuarial team. Helping the team respond to complex reserving issues and provide guidance and bespoke tooling to enable the reserves to be set appropriately.
  • Possess the skills to manage and engage the wider actuarial team to ensure reserving and parameterisation exercises are completed on time and to a high quality.
  • Identify and implement improvements to process and governance around the reserving function and required deliverables.
  • Effectively work within and influence a team, including prioritising your and the team’s workloads to meet and handle internal and external deadlines.
  • Be a recognised guide in the application of reserving methods, techniques and requirements. Keep up to date with emerging trends, tools and techniques within the wider external market.
  • Be present in the London office at least two days a week.
