We are Anthony Nolan. We unite people and science – matching stem cell donors to those in need of transplants and treatments and growing our world-leading stem cell register, so everyone can find the lifesaving match they need.

Thanks to Shirley and Anthony Nolan, our register of almost a million potential donors, our cell and gene therapy research and our expertise in stem cell transplants, we currently help four patients a day in need of a transplant, giving more people another chance to live.

Driven by patients, backed by stem cell donors, and powered by science, we won’t stop until we’ve unlocked the cures, treatments and transplants that will transform the future for more patients. And together, we can reach the remarkable day where every patient who needs us can not only survive, but thrive.

Title: Research Assistant

Salary: £36,983 per annum

Contract: Permanent

Hours: 35 per week (standard Anthony Nolan working hours)

Location: Full-time on-site, Anthony Nolan Research Institute, London

Working as a member of our Immunogenetics team, you will assist with the daily management and coordination of our long-running Patient/Donor Programme, studying Haematopoietic Cell Transplant (HCT) recipients and their donors. As part of the role, you will be responsible for the daily collection of samples, sterile separation of lymphocytes and storage of patient and donor material, as well as entering and maintaining relevant clinical data on our in-house databases, ensuring ethical and laboratory guidelines are followed at all times. You will work closely with the team to design, build and implement solutions within our Patient/Donor Programme, with the aim to innovate processes and streamline day-to-day running of the project. You will also be involved in the development of molecular assays, utilising a range of molecular biology techniques including the third-generation sequencing method Single Molecule Real-Time (SMRT) sequencing, to characterise HCT study cohorts.

Successful candidates will have a first class or 2:1 degree in a Biological Science (BSc) or equivalent. Good organisational skills are essential, with the ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines, whilst maintaining meticulous attention to detail. A positive attitude to problem-solving and the ability to work collaboratively in a team are required, as well as taking the initiative to work independently when necessary. Previous experience in a molecular biology laboratory with experience of techniques, such as DNA extraction, is advantageous, as well as knowledge of HLA or other immunogenetic gene systems.
