Role Purpose

As part of our Hydrogen and Derivatives Research team, the Research Analyst – Methanol will lead the development of detailed supply-demand, cost, and price forecasts for the low-carbon methanol market. Using Wood Mackenzie’s proprietary data, models, and expertise, you will deliver integrated long-term outlooks, focusing on the role of low-carbon methanol in traditional and emerging sectors. You will assess policy impacts, cost structures, and technology advancements to evaluate methanol’s competitiveness.

This role includes analysis of methanol transportation, storage, and emissions through the value chain, while collaborating across Wood Mackenzie’s Power & Renewables, Chemicals, Oils, Gas, and Carbon Management groups. You will represent Wood Mackenzie externally, attending industry events, interacting with clients, and contributing to market insights.

Main Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain long-term projections of methanol supply and demand by country.
  • Monitor and analyze evolving policies and their implications for methanol markets, providing expert opinion and quantifying impacts.
  • Assess the competitiveness of low-carbon methanol by leveraging proprietary asset valuation work and levelized cost analyses.
  • Contribute to model development for methanol transportation, storage, and emissions across the value chain.
  • Present market outlooks and insights to clients and prospects, ensuring high-quality client service.
  • Strengthen research through data collection via surveys, interviews, and secondary research.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and subject matter experts across Wood Mackenzie to develop and enhance content.

Knowledge and Experience

  • 2+ years experience of applying modelling solutions for the analysis of methanol or C1 chemicals
  • Passionate about the methanol industry and the need for decarbonisation
  • Strong familiarity with the policy landscape and its importance to influencing the penetration of low-carbon methanol
  • Familiarity with commodity demand, technology adoption and technology cost modelling
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities. Interested in using both qualitative and quantitative methods to answer market questions
  • Self-driven. Capable of switching between the roles of an individual contributor and a collaborator
  • Strong communication skills. Comfortable interacting with clients and industry stakeholders
  • An engaging nature, capable of connecting with co-workers, clients and industry stakeholders in a wide range of professional setting
  • A deep intellectual curiosity about the impact of a wider business landscape
