We are looking for a Research Analyst to join the Grid Edge research team within Wood Mackenzie’s Power & Renewables practice. The Grid Edge team consists of leading analysts covering some of the most cutting-edge topics in the energy transition, including transportation and building electrification, microgrids, distributed energy resource participation in energy markets, demand flexibility, and grid modernization. Our research and thought leadership inform the strategies of key players throughout the energy industry, driving innovative business models while hastening the energy transition.

The analyst will contribute to the team’s coverage of behind-the-meter (BTM) flexibility in Europe, including residential, commercial and industrial segments. Technologies include battery storage, heat pumps, and general demand-side response, and use cases include TSO and DSO market participation as well as general tariff-driven flexibility. The analyst will establish and maintain relationships with DER OEMs, developers and aggregators, DSOs, retailers, and investors, to stay at the forefront of industry developments. Through hands-on research they will publish reports, develop and maintain data sets, and provide critical intelligence that informs the strategies of industry stakeholders. The analyst will also work closely with Wood Mackenzie’s European power team to integrate BTM flexibility into its regional power models.

Experience in BTM flexibility is required, as are exceptional research, writing, and speaking skills. You must be someone who thrives on writing and editing high-quality reports, with a knack for gathering and then distilling significant amounts of information into focused, actionable insights.

Responsibilities

  • Be a subject matter expert in BTM flexibility in European markets—a go-to person for others in research, consulting and sales
  • Conduct hands-on research, including data gathering, 3rd party research review, and industry outreach
  • Track DER participation in major DSO and TSO markets in major European markets, including technologies, vendors, strategies, and customer offerings
  • Track the commercial landscape of DER OEMs, developers, aggregators, and investors, including value chain, strategy, partnerships and M&A
  • Collaborate with other European Grid Edge analysts on EV flexibility models and with European storage analysts on BTM battery revenue models
  • Collaborate with the Wood Mackenzie European power team to incorporate BTM flexible capacity forecasts into country-level power models
  • Produce multiple research reports throughout the year, and contribute to team-wide reports
  • Support Wood Mackenzie clients upon request and assist with customer acquisition and retention
  • Support Wood Mackenzie’s consulting team on European flexibility-related engagements
  • Present at conferences, moderate panels, engage with media, and publish thought pieces
  • Travel infrequently, but as necessary, to clients, conferences, and other Wood Mackenzie offices

Qualifications

  • Experience in European BTM flexibility, on the DER development, aggregation, finance, technology, or DSO side
  • Strong understanding of power sector fundamentals, as well as DER customer offerings and BTM participation in TSO and DSO markets
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English, with the ability to articulate key takeaways and craft compelling data-driven visuals
  • Excellent organizational skills, able to balance long-term research projects with near-term publications, client questions, and team development initiatives
  • Willingness to be a “full stack” researcher, from data gathering to modelling to report writing

Nice to haves

  • Prior experience as a research analyst, with a track record of publications and presentations
  • Modelling experience, with the ability to factor historical data, market trends, policy and regulation into a granular forecast
  • Experience with SQL and relational databases
  • Experience with python and its data science libraries (pandas, numpy, scikit-learn, etc.)
