Agilent inspires and supports discoveries that advance the quality of life. We provide life science, diagnostic and applied market laboratories worldwide with instruments, services, consumables, applications and expertise. Agilent enables customers to gain the answers and insights they seek -- so they can do what they do best: improve the world around us. Information about Agilent is available at www.agilent.com.

This role is ideal for an experienced engineer who enjoys working across software and hardware, and is interested in evolving towards modern embedded platforms.

Are you our new LabVIEW Software Engineer? We are looking for an additional permanent member of our team to develop software for Agilent’s Raman Spectroscopy products. The position will be based at our Harwell office near Oxford in the United Kingdom, with options for hybrid working. You will be working as part of a cross-functional R&D and product development team to develop high-quality software and products for our Pharmaceutical and Field Detection markets - delivering trusted answers, differentiated workflows and a common Agilent user experience.

As a LabVIEW Software Engineer, you will join a team of around 10 (full-time employees and contractors), certified as an NI Centre of Excellence, to demonstrate our ability as a world-class software team as part of the larger R&D function that includes hardware development, data science, optics, software quality and marketing. You will be developing software as part of a team using Agile methodologies to meet customer requirements, with a high-level of quality and consideration for regulatory and product security requirements.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced LabVIEW Software Engineer to work with a premier LabVIEW software team developing products making a difference in the world - from airport security screening and pharmaceutical quality control to hazardous chemical identification! You will contribute across the full development lifecycle, and adapt to new technologies and platforms.

We are in the early stages of evolving towards next-generation platforms which include embedded Linux and Rust/C++ software components, and are looking for someone interested in contributing to this transition. While LabVIEW remains central to our current products, we are actively investing in modernising our software platforms and expanding into new technologies.

There is also scope within the role to support development and maintenance of Windows IoT Enterprise images used in deployed instrumentation including configuration, deployment optimisation and lifecycle management.

Your main responsibilities will be:
  • Design, develop, test and debug LabVIEW Software for Raman Spectroscopy products to a high-level of quality as part of a small project development team
  • Working on new products, product improvement projects and supporting/maintaining existing products to add new features and address defects
  • Follow our Agile software development process using Jira for implementing new features and resolving defects across our portfolio of products
  • Work with the wider cross-functional team to define requirements, troubleshoot software & hardware integration issues and work with software quality team on software testing
  • Ensuring code is maintainable – writing good software documentation and writing unit tests
  • Contribute to our continuous improvement activities, internal user group and ongoing learning and development
  • Ensuring software meets regulatory (pharmaceutical or government) and product security requirements
  • Contribute to the development of our next generation product architecture - likely to be based on Embedded Linux with a Rust/C++.

We are particularly interested in engineers who:

  • Have strong LabVIEW fundamentals and enjoy working with hardware-integrated systems
  • Are curious and willing to learn new technologies (e.g. embedded Linux, C++/Rust)
  • Can work independently on well-defined problems while collaborating closely with a multi-disciplinary team

This position is based in Harwell, Oxford (UK) with the flexibility to work on a hybrid model (3 days in the office, 2 days from home). You will report to the R&D Software Manager (LabVIEW).

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree or equivalent in Software, Engineering or Life Sciences
  • Experienced LabVIEW Software Engineer – Certified LabVIEW Architect or Developer desirable, but certification is not crucial
  • Broad LabVIEW experience including working with hardware, databases, user interface development, object-oriented programming (LVOOP) and design, unit testing and source code control (Git) is all beneficial
  • Experience of agile software development as part of a development and cross-functional team is desirable
  • Experience of CI/CD systems (e.g. Jenkins) would be beneficial
  • Experience of Spectroscopy and/or laboratory instrumentation/product development is desirable
  • Experience in a regulated environment (e.g. Pharma / Aerospace / Defence / Aviation Security) is desirable
  • Experience with other software/programming/embedded languages is highly desirable
  • Experience in Windows IoT Enterprise customisation and imaging would be desirable
  • Experience with embedded Linux development is highly desirable
  • Must be willing & capable of obtaining baseline security clearances for work with local/international governments
  • Interest or experience in using AI-powered development tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot) to improve productivity and code quality.

On a personal level, you should be able to work well independently and as part of a product development team, have creative and good problem-solving and research skills – seeking simple and effective solutions to interesting problems using LabVIEW.

We offer:
  • Exciting projects in a multifaceted collaborative team grounded on an Agile Culture and Approach
  • Career development opportunities in an international company
