Quality Engineer

Position
Quality Engineer to ensure the quality, reliability, and robustness of data engineering and platform engineering pipelines within the Group Data Platform.

Summary of the Role
Howden Group Services is expanding its Group Data Platform team and is looking for a Quality Engineer to support data quality assurance, test automation, and validation frameworks across data engineering and platform engineering teams. The ideal candidate will have experience in testing data pipelines, automation frameworks, and CI/CD practices, with a focus on ensuring data integrity, accuracy, and reliability.

This role requires an analytical and detail-oriented individual who can work closely with engineers to embed quality-first principles, ensuring that data pipelines and platform components are thoroughly tested and meet business requirements. The successful candidate will help develop automated testing frameworks, define testing standards, and validate data engineering workflows.

Responsibilities
The successful candidate will:

  • Support the development and execution of a quality assurance strategy for data engineering and platform engineering pipelines.

  • Develop and execute test cases for data pipelines, ETL/ELT workflows, and data transformations.

  • Assist in building and maintaining automated data validation and pipeline testing frameworks.

  • Validate infrastructure and platform-level components, including CI/CD pipelines and cloud-based data services.

  • Collaborate with data engineers, platform engineers, and DevOps teams to ensure quality is embedded throughout development.

  • Monitor and report on key quality metrics, identifying and addressing issues proactively.

  • Ensure adherence to data governance, security, and compliance requirements.

  • Work with business stakeholders to understand requirements and contribute to effective testing strategies.

  • Support the adoption of best practices for unit testing, integration testing, regression testing, and performance testing in a data environment.

Requirements
Candidates should have:

  • 3+ years of experience in data quality engineering, software testing, or test automation.

  • Familiarity with testing data pipelines, ETL/ELT workflows, and big data solutions.

  • Experience with cloud-based data platforms, preferably Azure Databricks, Azure Data Factory, or Synapse Analytics.

  • Basic experience with test automation frameworks (e.g., PyTest, Great Expectations, DBT tests, or similar).

  • Proficiency in SQL and scripting languages (e.g., Python, Scala) for test automation.

  • Understanding of CI/CD and DevOps practices, with exposure to Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, or Jenkins.

  • Knowledge of data governance, security, and compliance best practices.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a keen attention to detail.

  • Ability to collaborate effectively with engineers, analysts, and business stakeholders.

  • Experience working with infrastructure testing (e.g., Terraform validation, cloud monitoring) (preferred).

  • Experience in the insurance or financial industry (not essential, but preferred).

This role is an excellent opportunity for a Quality Engineer to contribute to ensuring the reliability and accuracy of data engineering and platform solutions in a modern, scalable Group Data Platform.
