Location: Leeds, West Yorkshire
Working Pattern: Hybrid (2 days per week in office, subject to team requirements)
We’re modernising our technology estate using cloud platforms to provide services that are fast, secure, resilient for customers, and modern, simple and sustainable for our engineers. Our Cloud Platform underpins the Group's transformation, delivering capabilities primarily on Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Platform.
About the RoleAs an Engineering Lead, you will lead a large engineering organisation of approximately 75–150 engineers, working in partnership with a Lead Product Owner and reporting to the Cloud Platform Director.
We are particularly interested in candidates with experience in Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS), Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE) or Apigee.
Your role will combine strategic engineering leadership, team empowerment, and modern engineering excellence. You’ll work closely with product, architecture and engineering colleagues to deliver high‑quality cloud capabilities across the Group.
What You’ll DoLeadership & Strategy- Provide a compelling engineering strategy and roadmap for cloud platform teams.
- Inspire and motivate multi-disciplinary engineering teams to deliver exceptional customer outcomes.
- Collaborate with the Lead Product Owner who defines the What and Why, while you drive the How—including engineering methods, technical decisions, and ways of working.
- Champion modern engineering approaches including agile delivery, automation, observability, platform engineering and DevOps practices.
- Encourage participation in Guilds, Communities of Practice, Inner Source, and engineering meet‑ups to drive continual improvement and knowledge sharing.
- Support teams in adopting engineering practices aligned to Systems Thinking, Service Design and data‑driven decision making.
- Talent‑spot, recruit, and develop engineers across infrastructure, software, DevOps and cloud disciplines.
- Create a learning culture with a “Fail Fast, Learn Faster” mindset.
- Coach engineers and engineering managers to build a strong, inclusive and collaborative culture.
- Ensure all engineering work meets Bank standards for security, resilience, risk, and change control.
- Maximise safe empowerment and delegated decision‑making across teams.
- Work with architects and engineering communities to ensure alignment with patterns, standards, and best practice.
You will be a strategic and empathetic leader who brings:
Skills & Experience- Extensive software engineering background (any modern programming language).
- Strong experience leading large-scale engineering teams in complex organisations.
- Proven experience in cloud-based engineering—preferably Azure, GCP, Kubernetes or API platforms.
- Deep understanding of modern software engineering lifecycle, DevOps tooling, CI/CD and agile methodologies (Scrum, Kanban, Jira, Confluence).
- Ability to build trust, resolve technical impediments, and facilitate high‑quality decision making.
- A collaborative leadership style, able to listen, reflect and adapt.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to energise teams.
- Commitment to building autonomous teams with clear purpose and empowered delivery.
- Curiosity to learn and evolve engineering practices for better customer and colleague outcomes.
- Passion for automation, engineering quality and continuous improvement.
- Define and communicate a clear engineering strategy.
- Inspire high performance and innovation across cloud engineering teams.
- Support continuous improvement using agile and modern engineering practices.
- Ensure all engineering work meets Bank security, risk and governance standards.

- Act as a senior member of the wider engineering leadership community.
