To support the development, validation and industrialisation of electronic products by carrying out prototype assembly, product testing, fault investigation and technical documentation activities. The role provides hands-on test capability throughout the product development lifecycle, helping to ensure products meet performance, reliability, safety, compliance and manufacturing requirements.

In addition to the core test-engineering focus, the role provides practical R&D administration support by helping to maintain accurate documentation, process discipline, meeting records and departmental coordination. These administrative responsibilities support traceability, efficiency and good control of project information.

Responsibilities

1. Prototype assembly and development support

  • Assemble, modify and rework electronic prototypes, test samples and development units.

  • Support R&D engineers with bench-level debugging, fault finding and root cause investigation.

  • Prepare test samples, wiring harnesses, fixtures and basic jigs to support development and validation work.

  • Record prototype changes, observations and test outcomes accurately to support design traceability.

2. Product testing and validation

  • Plan, conduct and document product verification and validation testing in accordance with agreed test plans.

  • Use laboratory and electronic test equipment including Probit Lab equipment, environmental chamber, Hi-Pot test equipment, motion detector test equipment, glow wire test equipment, EMC testing using GTEM equipment, multimeters, oscilloscopes and other electronic test instruments.

  • Carry out functional, safety, environmental, pre-compliance, reliability and performance testing as required.

  • Analyse test results, identify failures or trends, and communicate findings clearly to project stakeholders.

  • Prepare concise test reports, test evidence and supporting documentation for design reviews and project records.

3. Quality, design and manufacturability

  • Communicate regularly with Quality in Design, Design for Manufacture and R&D engineering teams.

  • Provide practical test evidence and technical feedback to support design improvement activities.

  • Contribute to design reviews by highlighting validation risks, testability issues and manufacturing considerations.

  • Support corrective actions and design changes by reproducing faults, validating fixes and documenting results.

4. Industrialisation and manufacturing test support

  • Work alongside Industrialisation teams to define and implement test protocols for manufacturing.

  • Support the development of production test methods, test limits and acceptance criteria.

  • Assist with the transfer of test knowledge from R&D into manufacturing and production environments.

  • Provide engineering support during prototype, pre-production and early production build phases.

5. R&D administration and process support, secondary responsibility

  • Support adherence to established R&D workflows and approval processes, acting as a point of contact for documentation and procedural queries where appropriate.

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date project files, technical documentation and administrative records connected to R&D and test activity.

  • Organise and archive compliance-related paperwork and internal reports to support clear traceability.

  • Manage purchase orders, supplier documentation and internal requests when required to support R&D delivery.

  • Support onboarding of new team members with process guidance and document access.

  • Monitor document flow and help ensure approvals are completed in a timely manner, while maintaining the confidentiality and integrity of sensitive project information.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Qualification in Electronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering or a related discipline, such as HNC, HND, degree or equivalent experience.

  • Practical experience of electronics assembly, soldering, prototype build or test sample preparation.

  • Experience using common electronic test equipment such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, power supplies and signal generators.

  • Ability to interpret schematics, wiring diagrams, test procedures and technical documentation.

  • Strong fault-finding, analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Good written communication skills, with the ability to produce clear test notes and technical reports.

  • Strong organisational and administrative skills with excellent attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple tasks.

  • Proficiency in MS Office and document management systems.

  • Good communication skills for liaising across technical and non-technical teams.

  • Ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a multidisciplinary engineering team.

Desirable

  • Experience of EMC pre-compliance testing, ideally using GTEM equipment.

  • Knowledge of environmental, dielectric strength, glow wire, motion detector or product reliability testing.

  • Experience supporting product certification or compliance activities.

  • Experience developing or supporting manufacturing test procedures.

  • Understanding of lighting controls, motion detection, embedded electronics or electrical installation products.

  • Previous experience in administration, preferably in a technical or R&D environment.

  • Familiarity with document control and process management tools.

  • Minute-taking experience is desirable.
