Privacy Attorney

Permanent Role

Based in Great Abington, Cambridgeshire – Remote / Partial Remote Working Possible

As a Privacy Attorney at Illumina, you will be an integral part of our Global Privacy and Ethics Team and serve as subject matter expert (SME) for privacy and ethics issues as they arise in the APAC region. Working closely with cross-functional teams globally, you will support with assessing the impact of privacy and ethics considerations to our business operations in APAC. You may also collaborate with local marketing and sales teams to understand relevant markets and ensure the consistency of privacy practices and policy implementation. Whilst this role has a primary focus in the APAC region, this role also requires knowledge of European data privacy laws.

Why You

You will have considerable experience in a global privacy role within a multinational company (medical device, pharmaceutical or healthcare preferred) or a global law firm, with significant expertise in APAC matters. You will be a law graduate from a reputable law faculty, and preferably qualified to practice in the UK or another European jurisdiction.

Essentially, you will be proactive, dynamic, and results-driven with strong attention to detail. You will have excellent communication and relationship-building skills, enabling you to collaborate effectively with key business partners and stakeholders on privacy matters.

Responsibilities will include

In this role, you will work closely with the Legal, Compliance and Information Security functions to develop and monitor policies and procedures applicable to the business and in compliance with global privacy and data privacy laws and regulations, specifically in APAC. Duties will include:

  • Counsel and collaborate with multiple internal clients across Illumina and, where necessary, outside counsel to advise on applicable data privacy law issues in APAC.
  • Collaborate with Illumina’s IT, products and software teams to ensure all systems and procedures comply with local data privacy laws in APAC, regulation and policy, including in relation to the retention and destruction of data.
  • Assist with drafting (and negotiating, where required) templates for data processing and data sharing agreements.
  • Review, develop and perform training and internal corporate awareness campaigns.
  • Provide counsel related to advanced and cutting-edge data use as well as data mapping, classification, and related data management and governance.
  • Assist/conduct privacy-related risk and impact assessments and controls evaluations with business partners, including transfer impact assessments.
  • Assist with maintaining a data security incident management plan to ensure timely remediation of incidents including security breach response, complaints, claims or notifications, and responding to data subject rights requests (including data subject access requests).
  • Assist and answer data protection/privacy/ethics-related questions from internal business partners.
  • Assist with data privacy audits.
  • Remain current on changes to applicable privacy-related laws and regulations in the governing regions and proactively develop solutions to ensure company compliance and leadership.
  • Assist in maintaining and implementing onward data transfer mechanisms such as Standard Contractual Clauses, Binding Corporate Rules, and other applicable mechanisms.
  • Stay abreast of, and communicate clearly to non-lawyers, changes to or developments in privacy and data protection laws and regulations and their impact on business operations.
  • Promote effective work practices, work as a team member, and show respect for co-workers.

Education

  • Law degree from an accredited law school with exceptional academic credentials and a member of a state bar in good standing required.
  • Hold a regional Data Protection and/or Privacy certification such as CIPP/A.
  • Hold at least one Healthcare Compliance, Data Protection and/or Privacy certification such as, CIPP, CIPT, ISEB, etc., (preferred).

Work Experience

  • 5+ years of legal experience
  • Experience with US, EU and APAC data privacy laws.
  • Experience working with healthcare regulations and work experience in the medical device industry is preferred.

  • Well-developed and professional interpersonal skills; ability to interact effectively with people at all organizational levels of the company.
  • Experience of working in a large, global organization.
  • Ability to work unsupervised, exercise leadership, and influence change.
  • Excellent writing and presentation skills.
  • Strong change and project management skills, including the ability to manage time well, prioritize effectively, and handle multiple deadlines.
  • Ability to undertake large, long-term projects, develop alternative methods to complete them, and implement solutions.
  • Ability to use independent judgment and discretion when making decisions.
  • Detail-oriented approach needed to recommend and implement strategic improvements on a range of data privacy and data protection issues.
  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with the appropriate discretion.
  • Knowledge of PC applications, including MS Office.
  • Strong knowledge of the GDPR, CCPA and a good understanding of other major privacy frameworks and evolving legislation, security laws, rules and regulations worldwide, as well as industry leading-practices and standards.
  • Familiarity with corporate risk management and/or audit experience is also a plus.
  • Knowledge of language/s in the APAC region preferred.
