Job Overview:
The Principal Sustainability Specialist is a corporate sustainability resource supporting McDermott’s global operations, projects, and strategic initiatives across multiple regions and business lines. The role supports the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of McDermott’s sustainability, social performance, national content, and stakeholder engagement programs in alignment with corporate objectives, client commitments, applicable regulations, and international standards. The position provides technical and strategic support to proposals, project execution teams, corporate functions, and operational leadership to ensure effective integration of sustainability and social performance requirements throughout project lifecycles.
Key Tasks and Responsibilities:
Support the development and implementation of sustainability and social performance strategies across global operations and projects, in alignment with corporate objectives, client requirements, and applicable regulations.
Support the development and continuous maintenance of McDermott’s Social Responsibility management framework, including policies on
National and local content
Social risk and impact
Community investment
Stakeholder engagement
Provide technical support to business development, pre-FEED, FEED, EPC, and operational project teams on sustainability, local content, social investment, stakeholder engagement, and social risk matters.
Support the preparation of client proposals, execution plans, sustainability strategies, local content plans, and social performance deliverables for projects and pursuits globally.
Coordinate and support sustainability-related initiatives including but not limited to:
National content and workforce development programs
Local supplier and enterprise development initiatives
Community investment and community development programs
Stakeholder engagement and grievance management systems
Workforce training and capacity-building initiatives
Social impact and risk assessments
Support implementation and alignment with international sustainability frameworks and standards including but not limited to applicable client sustainability and local content requirements.
Coordinate and align with internal functions including Operations, Supply Chain, HR, Legal, Ethics & Compliance, HSE, Security, and Project Management Teams to support implementation of sustainability objectives and compliance obligations.
Support supplier engagement and capacity-building initiatives to enhance participation of local businesses within project and operational supply chains.
Monitor, evaluate, and report on sustainability and social performance commitments, initiatives, and KPIs across projects and operations.
Support sustainability audits, assessments, due diligence activities, and compliance reviews across operations and projects.
Contribute to the development, review, and continuous improvement of corporate sustainability procedures, guidance documents, governance frameworks, and management systems.
Promote business objectives including operational efficiency, risk mitigation, regulatory compliance, reputational enhancement, and social value creation.
Support management of sustainability-related risks and mitigation measures associated with project execution and operations globally.
Adhere to and promote company safety, environmental, ethical, and compliance requirements.
Essential Qualifications and Education:
• Excellent teamwork, stakeholder engagement, collaboration, and communication skills.
• Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving capabilities.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities across different regions, projects, and stakeholders.
• Cross-cultural awareness and ability to effectively engage with diverse internal and external stakeholders globally.
• Flexibility and willingness to travel internationally and support project site activities where required.
• Experience supporting complex multinational projects and multi-stakeholder environments preferred.
• BA/BS in Sustainability, International Development, Social Sciences, International Relations, Business, or related field.
• Professional certifications or postgraduate qualifications in sustainability, ESG, social performance, or related disciplines are advantageous.
• Languages: Fluent spoken and written English required; additional languages like Portuguese, Italian, French are advantageous.
• Minimum 7 years of experience in sustainability, social performance, local content, ESG, project execution, consulting, or related fields within energy, infrastructure, extractives, or multinational corporate environments.
