Do Work That Matters

As Principal Software Engineer in Bankwest Technology, you will provide strategic technical leadership across our enterprise integration and communications platforms. You will shape the transition towards AWS cloud-native architectures, defining target architecture, engineering standards and reusable capabilities while helping teams navigate complex re-platforming decisions.

See yourself in our team

Our engineering teams are modernising the integration platforms that connect customer-facing applications, backend systems and external services. The goal is to reduce legacy complexity, establish scalable, domain-aligned services and enable simpler, more reliable integration across the bank.

Bring your ambition and we’ll help you grow, belong and shape what’s next. You will join a community that values courage, care and commitment, with the opportunity to build new skills, collaborate with experienced technologists and create meaningful impact for customers and colleagues.

In this role, you will:

  • Set the technical direction and target architecture for enterprise integration and communications capabilities.

  • Shape modern patterns across APIs, event-driven architecture, messaging, streaming and asynchronous processing, with clear guidance on when each approach should be used.

  • Lead the replatforming of critical capabilities to AWS using appropriate cloud-native, managed and serverless services.

  • Establish reusable capabilities that reduce point-to-point integration, duplication and bespoke engineering.

  • Define engineering standards across security, resilience, observability, scalability and developer experience.

  • Create pragmatic migration and transition patterns that protect critical services while legacy platforms are progressively replaced.

  • Partner with engineering teams, architects and other Principal Engineers to align solutions with the broader technology landscape.

  • Remain technically hands-on enough to validate designs, explore new capabilities and solve complex engineering problems.

We’re interested in hearing from people who:

You are a strategic engineering leader who combines deep architecture capability with practical engineering judgement. You can establish a clear technical direction, influence across organisational boundaries and help teams turn complex modernisation goals into safe, achievable outcomes.

  • Bring significant experience designing or modernising large-scale integration, distributed systems or enterprise platform capabilities.

  • Have deep knowledge of AWS and cloud-native architecture, including managed and serverless services.

  • Understand API design, event-driven architecture, enterprise messaging, streaming and asynchronous processing.

  • Have led major platform modernisation or replatforming initiatives while maintaining service continuity.

  • Can design for security, resilience, scalability, observability and operational excellence.

  • Are comfortable working primarily across backend engineering and architecture.

  • Can work effectively with .NET Core environments or bring strong experience in another modern language and an openness to working with .NET.

  • Combine thought leadership and influencing skills with the technical depth to challenge designs and guide implementation.
