Job Overview:
We are looking for a Staff Software Engineer who enjoys solving complex systems problems and building software that improves performance. Join our Observe and Accelerate team in Austin, Texas, in this hands-on technical role! We create performance analysis toolkits used across Arm solutions.
Our focus is software engineering: designing and implementing new features, diagnosing technical issues, and developing tools for real-world workloads. We need an engineer to reproduce problems, analyze performance, write maintainable code and deliver tested solutions, with ownership of the technical work from design through to delivery.
We are looking for more than seven years of software engineering experience, with evidence of delivering reliable software and resolving difficult technical problems. We value engineers who develop software in multiple languages and connect application behavior with the distributed and low-level systems beneath it. We work with product and customer-facing teams to turn user feedback into engineering improvements.
Would you like to turn challenging systems problems into software that makes a difference? We welcome new perspectives and ideas!
Responsibilities:
  • Design, implement and maintain features and tools for performance analysis across Arm solutions
  • Take hands-on ownership of software components, from technical design and implementation through testing, integration and release
  • Investigate software behavior across applications, distributed systems, operating systems, VMs, containers, storage and networking
  • Analyze and optimize workload and system performance using profiling, tracing, benchmarking and experimentation
  • Work with product and customer-facing teams to translate requirements and user feedback into practical engineering solutions
  • Demonstrate our performance tooling to customers, with a willingness to travel for on-site collaboration
  • Contribute to design and code reviews, explain technical tradeoffs and share knowledge to help the team deliver reliable software

Required Skills and Experience:
  • We require more than 7 years of hands-on software engineering experience. We look for evidence of designing, building and delivering software, with ownership of complex technical work from investigation through implementation and validation.
  • Strong hands-on software development experience across multiple programming languages, frameworks and technology stacks.
  • Broad systems experience spanning several areas such as applications, distributed systems, operating systems, virtualization, storage and networking.
  • Strong experience crafting and building tools, diagnostics or automation, with maintainable code and automated tests.
  • Significant experience with performance analysis, profiling, benchmarking, optimization and root-cause analysis.
  • Ability to turn requirements into technical designs, evaluate tradeoffs and work with other engineers through implementation and code review.
  • Good understanding of cloud platforms, Linux systems and modern CPU architectures, including how architectural differences affect software behavior and performance.

"Nice To Have" Skills and Experience:
  • We welcome experience developing performance analysis, observability, profiling, benchmarking or optimization tools, including work with perf, Intel VTune, AMD uProf, NVIDIA profiling tools or Linux tracing technologies.
  • Experience working with Arm architecture or Arm-based cloud infrastructure.
  • Understanding of processor architecture, memory hierarchy, cache behavior, NUMA and concurrency.
  • Experience investigating performance in cloud-native, distributed or Kubernetes-based systems.
  • Experience with major cloud platforms such as AWS, Microsoft Azure or Google Cloud Platform.
  • Experience building developer-facing products, SDKs or engineering productivity tooling.
  • Experience using AI-assisted development tools or agents to accelerate debugging, analysis or software development.
