Job Description

As Power Electronics Engineer you will be responsible for performing Low Voltage and Medium Voltage power electronics and electrical design tasks on Drive Systems projects. This is a technical role and will involve working in a multi-disciplinary team of engineers to specify, design, support manufacturing & validation of megawatt-scale power electronics for Marine, Energy, and Industry applications.

Core responsibilities:

  • Specify, design and document power electronics converters technical solutions to meet specific application requirements.
  • Undertake all aspects of power electronics circuits design, snubber design, gating electronics design, thermal design, filters and reactors, etc.
  • Develop analytical and modelling tools to optimise the performance of  thermal solutions,  conduct harmonics and common mode studies, perform derating analysis, etc.
  • Conduct verification and validation testing of LV & MV power electronic systems in the megawatt range, including: full temperature heat run tests; Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) tests; overload and abnormal condition assessments; performance evaluation and optimisation.
  • Ensure power electronic system designs comply with applicable health & safety regulations, international technical standards and class society rules.
  • Support attainment of on-time delivery, cost, and quality targets on projects.

Essential qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in electrical engineering with a few years of relevant experience working on power electronics design, or PhD in a related field.
  • Understanding of semiconductor device (Diodes, Thyristors, IGBTs, GTOs, IGCT, MOSFETS, SiC, GaN, etc.) and related gating electronics, snubber circuits, and thermal design practices.
  • Possession of, or capable of obtaining, UK security clearance to SC level.

Nice to have:

  • Experience in modelling, analysis, design capture and simulation using tools such as: MATLAB, Simulink, PLECS, SPICE, Mathcad, CFD, etc., or similar.
  • Experience in control systems design and analysis for power electronic converters and drives.
  • Good communication and leadership skills with a can-do attitude and growth mindset

This role involves work for customers who manage critical infrastructure; based on customer requirements it will be necessary to carry out background checks and suitability assessments (UK BPSS clearance OR UK SC clearance) as part of the hiring process.
