Who we are:
Apollo is a specialised independent (re)insurer, established in 2009, to deliver top-tier products and services to clients, brokers, and capital partners at Lloyd’s. The name "Apollo" was inspired by the achievements of one of its founding investors, Neil Armstrong, the first person to walk on the moon in 1969. Together with Jim Hays, Neil identified an opportunity to create a unique service provider within Lloyd’s.
Since its inception as Apollo Syndicate 1969, the company has expanded its range of insurance solutions, offering everything from traditional and specialty lines to innovative sharing economy products and managing agency services at Lloyd’s. Today, Apollo continues to grow with a team of over 250 professionals dedicated to fulfilling the company’s mission of supporting a resilient and sustainable future.
“We attract and retain a diverse range of talent by fostering an inclusive, equitable team environment where individuals from all backgrounds have opportunities to grow, succeed, and contribute. We empower our teams to achieve excellence and drive forward-thinking solutions, aiming to enable a resilient and sustainable world.” - David Ibeson, Group CEO

Your Role:

This wide-ranging actuarial role will include establishing the portfolio analytics and optimization processes, review of reinsurance structures and new business opportunities with the aim of helping Apollo make objective, evidence-based portfolio decisions.

The role will collaborate closely with the other actuarial teams (capital, pricing, and reserving) as well as engagement with the underwriting teams. This role will initially have one portfolio management analyst as a direct report with expected growth of the team in the future.

What you’ll do:

  • Lead on Portfolio Management activities, working collaboratively with the actuarial function, business intelligence, claims, and underwriting teams.
  • Key support in business planning process, including the provision of analytics to inform and challenge business planning assumptions.
  • Assist in review of new business opportunities.
  • Lead assessment and implementation of Apollo’s reinsurance strategy, by considering effectiveness of existing and proposed structures.
  • Support with wider actuarial workstreams including technical pricing, actuarial function report opinions, providing challenge and input into other actuarial teams.
  • Drive greater understanding of the data to achieve objective, evidence-based decisions.
  • Lead in actively monitoring portfolios to understand and quantify the main drivers of underwriting performance.
  • Develop a broad set of portfolio optimisation metrics, to give greater insight into commercial decisions and help maximise the return on capital.
  • Direct analysts to create a suite of data visualization tools and dashboards.
  • Ensure all decisions are clearly documented and auditable.
  • Maintain openness, integrity, and professionalism with all Apollo staff and with regulators.

What we are looking for:

  • Experience in at least one of the following: capital, portfolio management, pricing, or outwards reinsurance
  • Fully qualified FIA, or equivalent
  • Experience in the Lloyd’s/London Market would be beneficial but not essential.
  • Process efficiency & automation
  • SQL experience
  • Programming languages (e.g., R, Python)
  • Familiarity with Tyche and/or other capital modelling platforms
  • Predictive analytics (Data science)
  • Good Data Governance experience
  • Familiarity with one of more data visualisation tools (including Power BI, Tableau, QlikView)
  • Creative with the ability to solve problems.
  • Knowledge of current economic and professional technical trends and issues
  • Demonstrable interpersonal skills
  • Collaborative work ethic

What you will get in return:
As well as your salary, this role offers a discretionary bonus plus a broad range of benefits, including Non-Contributory Pension, Private Medical & Travel Insurance.
Our Commitment to Inclusion:
Apollo is a growing and diverse team of empowered and passionate experts who focus on bringing innovation, data driven decision making and collaboration to every relationship and every risk. To meet the needs of a demanding global insurance market, we need a diverse workforce that truly understands the international communities we serve.
That is why we're focused on developing diverse talent at every level; inclusion and diversity means more to us than just chasing a target and we are committed to supporting and celebrating difference. Our people are at the heart of our business which is why we value the diversity of thought and talent of every member of our team.
We offer a range of support and run a programme of events and training that recognise the challenges and opportunities relating to diversity.
Hybrid & flexible working:
At Apollo, hybrid and flexible working is fully embraced and we do not see the benefit of presenteeism. We understand that no two colleagues are alike, and as such we support the ability to remain agile and achieve a home and work balance to best suit business and personal commitments.
