  • A bespoke cover letter (no more than 300 words) that tells us what motivates you to apply for this internship and why you think you’re best suited for the placement – if you can do or say something to help your cover letter stand out then please do. We encourage you to be original and authentic to who you are.

  • Eligibility: Currently enrolled in / freshly graduated from further education (e.g. a degree course).

  • Start date: 8th September 2025. Our internship is a part-time opportunity working an average of 3 days per week.

  • Length: Initially this internship is intended to last for 4 months (up until 31st December 2025) however we can accommodate longer internships if the intern and the team they join both think it’s the right fit.

About us:

Creative Play Lab (CPL) is at the heart of new product innovations at the LEGO Group. We experiment with emerging technologies, tinker with new tools, band together with new brands and integrate new inventions into the LEGO system of play to create the toys of tomorrow’s world. As a Play Inventor & Ideation Intern you’ll be based in the Play Discovery department, integrated into the teams that invent new concepts to cater for newly identified play needs and develop those ideas into testable play-prototypes.

About the Internship:

The Play Invention & Ideation Internship will immerse you in the world of Play Discovery at the LEGO Group where playfulness and curiosity drive everything we do. You will be exposed to the complex, creative and chaotic world of radical innovation with ever-evolving briefs, frequent pivoting of priorities and lots of experimentation. There are a lot of unknowns when discovering new Play and we rely on our interns to inject infectious energy, fresh ideas and unique perspectives into our teams.

You’ll spend your time jumping between your own personal projects, your team’s capability initiatives and our bigger ‘Innovation Missions’ where we work cross-functionally to explore new ideas together. Every day is different here and you’ll need to be comfortable hopping quickly from one task to another all while honing your skills as a prototyper and learning how we operate within the Creative Play Lab. You'll be mentored to master your craft by world leading experts in play, invention and ideation where your unending curiosity will be your greatest asset.

Meet the teams:

As a part of the internship application, you will select which one of our Play Discovery capability teams you feel the strongest connection with:

  • Play Invention (Hardware): This team is made up of creative engineers who discover play by finding the magic in technology/electronics, sketching ideas using hardware and software together. They prototype with breadboards, electronic components, PCBs and code to explore how things like sensors, motors, lights and sound can be used to create new play experiences.

  • Play Invention (Digital): This team bridges the realms of software, physical-digital technologies and creative coding to quickly prototype and iterate on ways to find new fun in interactive experiences. They focus on integrating software components into the play experience to develop platforms, apps and programs that uncover new play.

  • Play Ideation: This team works to support others in creating and curating ideas and concepts. They turn ‘what if?’ into ‘what’s next?’ by bringing frameworks, tools and unique approaches and perspectives to spark others to reach their full potential when ideating.

Experience with at least some of the following:

  • Sketching

  • Painting

  • Sculpture

  • Graphic Design

  • Adobe Photoshop

  • Adobe Illustrator

  • LEGO Model Building

  • Electronics

  • 3D CAD programs

  • Game Engines

  • Coding

  • Videography / Editing

  • Designing for kids

What we’re looking for:

Curiosity – Our teams thrive on a playful curiosity in all they do. You need to be always asking questions, seeking the reason “why”, digging for answers even when it’s hard and never stop wondering “what if...”

Bravery – Our organisation is a huge place full of different people and different perspectives. You need to be comfortable meeting new people every day, speaking up when you disagree, receiving feedback, facing the unknowns of innovation head on and forging yourself a path when things aren’t well defined.

Focus – Our workload and priorities are always changing. You need to be happy shifting priorities fast, focusing 100% on a high priority task one week then focusing 100% on your own independent ideas and concepts the next.

Responsibilities:

Your day-to-day work will depend a lot on which specific Play Discovery capability team you are supporting at any moment. In all cases we want you to bring all your energy, enthusiasm and experiences to work every day so we can achieve amazing things together while you learn along the way. Some of your typical responsibilities could include...

  • Push the boundaries of play by imagining new universes, creating compelling characters and constructing new prototypes to bring concepts to life.

  • Research innovative technologies, materials and toys to discover new possibilities within physical and digital play.

  • Communicate ideas through a range of media e.g. sketches, models, digital mockups, 3D prints, videos etc.

  • Create new LEGO elements and be resourceful using every tool at your disposal to hack, build and learn every day.

  • Explore new play opportunities by testing physical / digital prototypes to gather feedback and iterate on ideas.

  • Collaborate with a team of experienced designers, developers, engineers, artists and researchers to drive our innovation missions forward.

Perks:

  • Shape the future of play in Creative Play Lab and contribute to the LEGO models and experiences of the future.

  • Work with a passionate team of like-minded inventors and ideators where you’ll learn something new every day and build your professional network.

  • Join the team in person in our London Hub office with access to our tools and lab.

  • Gain an insight into how an innovation department operates and the processes through which we design our model portfolio at the LEGO Group.
