About Zipline’s Platform team:

The Zipline Platform Team enables Zipline to innovate quickly and safely, ensuring our platform can scale and adapt to meet the needs of every customer. Ultimately, we build and maintain the foundation that keeps our platform reliable, secure, and scalable. Our mission is to empower our wider engineering team to deliver with confidence by providing a resilient infrastructure, streamlined CI/CD pipelines, and world-class developer experience. We focus on performance, stability, and reliability, while continuously improving our systems through observability, automation, and improvement.

About the Role:

As an Intermediate Software Engineer, you will play a key role in scaling and improving Zipline’s cloud infrastructure, CI/CD systems, and developer experience. You will help design automation solutions, manage containerized environments, and build tools that enable our application development teams to deliver software efficiently and reliably. This role blends hands-on cloud operations with infrastructure development.

What you will do:

  • Partner with teams across engineering to improve platform quality, reliability, and developer experience.
  • Enhance system observability through improved monitoring, alerting, and telemetry.
  • Optimize database performance and scalability (primarily PostgreSQL).
  • Collaborate with developers primarily using Ruby on Rails to embed DevOps best practices into the development lifecycle.
  • Build, maintain, and optimize CI/CD pipelines to ensure scalable, reliable, and faster deployments.
  • Implement Infrastructure as Code using Terraform to manage cloud resources.
  • Manage and scale containerized infrastructure on Kubernetes.
  • Support and evolve cloud environments on AWS (experience with GCP or Azure a plus).
  • Participate in on-call rotations and provide support for critical production issues.

What we look for:

  • Proficiency in at least one programming language (Ruby preferred; Typescript/ JavaScript a plus).
  • Relevant production experience with large-scale rails applications
  • Proficiency with at least one major cloud provider (AWS preferred).
  • Strong understanding of observability tools (such as Datadog and Sentry) and practices.
  • Hands-on experience with containerization and orchestration tools (Docker, Kubernetes, ECS).
  • Strong knowledge of CI/CD tools (like CircleCI, Jenkins, GitHub Actions, GitLab CI).
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code (like Terraform, Pulumi, Ansible).
  • Excellent communication skills and a collaborative mindset.
  • Excellence as a remote contributor, managing time and communication with intention, staying connected to the team, and delivering results reliably
  • Proud of your craft, valuing clean code that scales to keep large teams productive.

Technologies you'll work with

  • Ruby on Rails
  • Postgres, Redis, Elasticsearch
  • Typescript, JavaScript, React, Webpack
  • AWS, Heroku, Fastly, Terraform
  • Github, CircleCI, Docker, Kubernetes

What’s in it for you:

  • Remote-first culture: Join a high performing, fully remote team and work where you're comfortable
  • Stock Options: Get meaningful ownership in a fast-growing, venture-backed company shaping the future of retail.
  • Time Off: Our flexible time-off policy ensures you stay refreshed and recharged. Plus, you’ll get a monthly stipend to get you out of the house—grab a coffee and work from your favorite spot!
  • Benefits: World-class medical, dental, and vision policies.
  • Team Connection: Annual company off-sites in fun locations. We've done New York, Costa Rica, Whistler, Palm Springs, San Diego, and Mexico City.
  • Sabbatical:  A one month paid sabbatical after completing five years of working at Zipline.
  • Volunteering:  Every quarter, Zipliners get a paid day off to volunteer for a nonprofit of their choice.
  • Learning: We support continuous learning and provide unlimited access to our Udemy Business account
  • Great humans, great work: Work with kind, collaborative teammates who care about doing meaningful work and making a real impact.  We value diversity of all kinds and are committed to building a diverse and inclusive workplace where we learn from each other. We are an equal opportunity employer and welcome people of all different backgrounds, experiences, abilities, and perspectives.

Want to learn more about how we work?

We may be remote, but we’re anything but disconnected. Zipline is a thriving, dynamic team spread across the globe—collaborating, innovating, and having a blast along the way.

Zipliners work from all over—vans, boats, Airbnbs, and everything in between. No office? No problem. Our culture still feels like one big hug.

Even though we’re distributed, we make space to connect—whether it’s our weekly all-company social or gathering in person at our yearly retreats. We’re building something meaningful together, and we’re glad you’re thinking of joining us.
We can’t wait to meet you!
