If life at Marshmallow sounds like it could be for you, explore our Culture Handbook to find out more.

Move our mission, and your career, forward.

About the Role

As the Platform Team Lead at Marshmallow, you will guide our Platform & DevEx team, reporting directly to Director of Engineering. This is a leadership role that combines technical depth with strategic ownership, giving you responsibility for both our cloud infrastructure and the developer experience across the company.

You will play a pivotal role in shaping how our engineers build, ship, and scale products. From AWS architecture to CI/CD pipelines, from developer productivity tooling to security and compliance, you’ll drive strategic improvements that enable Marshmallow to scale from one product to many.

You’ll initially manage a team of 4 senior engineers, mentoring and coaching them to grow, while ensuring the team delivers clear business value.

Your Responsibilities
  • Set Vision & Roadmap

    • Define and own the Platform & Developer Experience roadmap, aligning with company objectives.

    • Identify and prioritise opportunities where platform improvements directly support business outcomes (time-to-market, developer efficiency, infrastructure cost).

    • Communicate vision, goals, and progress to senior leadership and other stakeholders.

    Lead & Mentor

    • Manage and coach platform engineers, helping them grow technically and as leaders.

    • Foster a collaborative team culture that values continuous learning, innovation, and operational excellence.

    • Act as the escalation point for complex challenges and incidents, ensuring effective resolution and learning.

    Scale, Secure & Optimise

    • Oversee AWS infrastructure at scale, ensuring it is performant, cost-efficient, secure, and resilient.

    • Take clear ownership of platform spend, monitoring and optimising costs while evaluating ROI of new tools and services.

    • Partner with InfoSec to manage risks, support external audits (e.g. ISO, SOC2, FCA requirements), and embed compliance into platform practices.

    • Champion automation of BAU/KTLO work, freeing up engineers to focus on strategic improvements.

    Enable Developers

    • Drive improvements in developer productivity and tooling, making it easy for engineers to deliver safely and quickly.

    • Ensure CI/CD pipelines, observability, and local development environments are reliable, efficient, and scale with the organisation.

    • Manage meaningful developer productivity metrics (e.g. DORA, SPACE, DX Core4) and use them to guide investments in developer experience.

    Industry Awareness & Innovation

    • Stay ahead of emerging trends in platform engineering and developer productivity, ensuring Marshmallow remains competitive.

    • Explore and critically evaluate new approaches and technologies — including Generative AI — for their potential to improve developer productivity, accelerate delivery, and reduce complexity.

    • Lead adoption of best practices and new tools where they provide clear organisational value.

    Stakeholder & Organisational Impact

    • Represent the platform function to senior leadership, product engineering, and InfoSec, translating technical progress into business impact.

    • Balance short-term delivery with long-term scalability, ensuring the platform meets the needs of multiple products.

    • Play a visible role in shaping Marshmallow’s engineering culture, promoting best practices, and driving alignment across teams.

Your Experience
  • Leadership: Proven experience managing engineers, mentoring, and guiding cross-functional initiatives.

  • Strategic Ownership: Ability to set technical vision, define roadmaps, and communicate progress to senior stakeholders.

  • AWS & Infrastructure: Strong background in AWS services, secure and scalable architecture design, and networking at scale.

  • Developer Experience: Hands-on experience improving developer workflows, CI/CD, observability, and productivity tooling.

  • Infrastructure as Code & Automation: Expertise with Terraform (or similar) and CI/CD pipelines (TeamCity experience a plus).

  • Security & Compliance: Familiarity with regulatory requirements, security risk management, and direct involvement in external audits.

  • Metrics & Measurement: Experience applying frameworks like DORA or SPACE to track and improve developer productivity.

  • Emerging Technologies: Curiosity and openness to experimenting with new approaches, including AI-driven developer tools.

  • Cost & Procurement Ownership: Demonstrated ability to evaluate tools and services, manage infrastructure costs, and make strong business cases for investment.

  • Resilience & Incident Leadership: Experience leading high-severity incidents, embedding post-mortem learnings, and driving resilience at scale.

  • Collaboration: Skilled at building alignment across engineering, product, and security teams, and influencing at the executive level.
