Addressing Black representation in the energy industry
At Octopus Energy, our mission is to drive the global renewable revolution and make green energy affordable for all. In order to succeed, we need to build a team that represents everyone in our society. Unfortunately, Black professionals make up < 2% of the energy workforce, which is a significant under-representation compared to the ethnic composition of the UK. To help address this, we have created an internship programme that is only open to candidates who identify with any Black, Black British, African or Caribbean background. We are committed to promoting equality, and this internship is an important step in our effort to foster greater diversity and inclusiveness in our business and industry.

Applications for all our internships will close on the 27th April. Please do not upload a CV when asked for 'Resume/CV'.... instead, upload a cover letter made up of no more than 500 words (instructions below) 💚

This is our sixth year running the internship programme. You can hear from our past interns and learn about our previous internships.

Location: London office

Duration: Full time, 6th July-28th August

Pay: £28,000 (pro rata)

Application deadline: April 27th, 2026

Octopus Energy Generation (OEGEN) is a leader in sourcing, investing in, and managing a wide range of utility-scale renewable energy assets. As we continue to expand our investment base, we are dedicated to building a diverse team that reflects the communities we serve. Currently, we manage a global portfolio of over £7 billion in renewable energy assets.
We are committed to delivering best-in-class responsible investment activity, offering like-minded investors the means and products to invest their capital sustainably. It is our ambition to change the entire energy lifecycle and make every green electron matter, delivering the best outcomes for customers, investors, the environment and society, accelerating the transition to net zero.

What You'll Do:

  • Deal Screening & Execution: Support the team in evaluating new investment opportunities across the energy transition—ranging from nature capital to green hydrogen and grid technologies.
  • Financial Modelling: Assist in building and updating valuation models to assess the commercial viability and returns of potential acquisitions or follow-on investments.
  • Market Intelligence: Conduct deep-dive research into new geographies or energy technologies to help shape our investment thesis.
  • Due Diligence Support: Work alongside team members and external advisors (legal, technical, financial) to coordinate the due diligence process for live transactions.
  • Investment Committee Prep: Help draft investment papers and presentations for our Investment Committee, learning how to synthesize complex data into a compelling investment case.
  • Ad-hoc Strategic Projects: Support on high-priority internal projects, which could include anything from competitor benchmarking to ESG reporting for our funds.

What You'll Need:

  • Analytical Mindset: A natural comfort with numbers and the ability to break down complex problems into logical steps.
  • Passion for the Transition: A genuine, demonstrable interest in renewable energy and the shift to a net-zero economy.
  • Proactive Attitude: We are a fast-paced "scale-up" within a large company; you need to be a self-starter who is happy to dive into new tasks with curiosity.
  • Strong Communication: The ability to present your findings clearly and concisely, both in writing and verbally.
  • Academic Background: Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in a relevant field (e.g., Finance, Economics, Engineering, or Geography/Sustainability), though we care more about your mindset than your specific major.
  • Attention to Detail: In investments, the small things matter—you take pride in the accuracy of your work.
  • Desired but not Essential Skills
  • Prior Excel Experience: Familiarity with basic financial functions (e.g., DCF, NPV) or a desire to become an Excel wizard quickly.
  • Commercial Awareness: An understanding of current affairs in the energy sector or broader financial markets.

What you'll gain:

  • Hands-on Transaction Experience: You won't just be observing, but a core part of a deal team, gaining insight into how energy infrastructure investments are structured and closed.
  • Technical Financial Skills: Develop your proficiency in Excel and financial valuation techniques specifically tailored to infrastructure and renewable energy.
  • Energy Sector Expertise: Gain a front-row seat to the global energy transition, learning the nuances of energy markets, regulatory frameworks, and low-carbon technologies.
  • Exposure to Leadership: Work in a flat hierarchy where you’ll regularly interact with and learn from senior investment professionals and industry experts.
  • Impactful Work: The chance to contribute to real-world projects that are actively decarbonizing the energy system and fighting climate change.

*** IMPORTANT - HOW TO APPLY ***
Follow the link below to be taken to an application form where you will be prompted to 'Attach Resume/CV'. PLEASE DO NOT UPLOAD A CV. Instead, you should upload a cover letter made up of no more than 500 words. 🚀
This cover letter is your chance to stand out! We want to know about you, your passions, and why you think you would be a great fit for an internship at Octopus Energy. We don’t use CVs as we are more interested in what makes you tick than we are about the opportunities you have had up to this point.
It is really important that this cover letter is written by you and really tells us your story. By putting this into AI, your story will get lost. So, while we typically encourage efficient ways of working, please refrain from using AI for this task 🤖
This cover letter is the same for all our internships, so if you are applying for one or multiple positions, you will only need to write one. Please use the below brief of what to include:

  • Before your skills and experience, we’re looking for the right kind of person – the kind who is utterly passionate about our mission and who thrives working how we work. So, please let us know why the Octopus Energy Group stands out to you? 🐙
  • Tell us about yourself - who you are, what you are studying or have studied, what makes you…you?
  • What do you think you could bring to an internship at Octopus Energy?
  • Tell us about a time you went above and beyond to help someone else, not because you had to, but because it was the right thing to do.
  • If we gave you a stage and 2 minutes to teach the company something, anything, that has nothing to do with energy, what would it be?

We want to ensure you have all the tools and environment you need to unleash your potential. Need any specific accommodations? Whether you require specific accommodations during your interview process or have a unique preference, let us know, and we'll do what we can to customise your interview process for comfort and maximum magic!
