Job Description:

Working as part of an established team, the role involves working across 2 large data centres in the north east of England providing onsite IT infrastructure support. The role is predominantly based in Wynyard but with travel to Doxford also required. The core duties of the engineer will involve racking and stacking of hardware, structured and patch cable installations (fibre and copper) and Incident support, however the role is varied and the engineer will be involved in most aspects of the day to day running and support of the IT hardware within the data centre environment. This is a dayshift role with on-call required.

Applicants should be UK nationals and either hold or meet the criteria for SC clearance.

The tasks will include (but not limited to):

  • Installation/Move/Add/Change tasks for scheduled work.

  • On-site operational support for break fix incidents.

  • Patching and structured cabling installations and decommissions.

  • Base configs of multivendor IT equipment to allow devices to be remotely connected to.

  • Troubleshooting connectivity issues including trunk cabling, patching and configuration issues.

  • Coordinate and manage escalations for data issues with supplementary service providers performing additional data services.

  • Support IMAC work where they are requirements for this to be supported out of hours.

  • Maintain and create data centre documentation including patch schedules and asset inventories.

  • Role may require travel between 2 data centres, less than 30 miles apart, to support onsite tasks where required.

Required skills and attributes

  • Intermediate troubleshooting and problem solving skills, using quantitative data to draw conclusions.

  • Ability to apply subject matter knowledge to resolve general support issues.

  • Experience of cable installations performed to an extremely high standard.

  • Ability to use tools and measurements which are compliant with cabling certification process for fibre and copper infrastructure.

Desirable skills

  • Hardware troubleshooting experience or certifications from any hardware manufacturers.

  • Network certifications such as CCNA or Network+.

  • UTP and Fibre optic cabling installation, testing, and repair.

  • Ability to look for opportunities to improve existing processes and workflow designs.

  • Excellent written and verbal communications; ability to listen and interface with both technical and non-technical personnel.

  • Demonstrated ability to recognize and react to situations with a sense of urgency and problem ownership.

  • Must have an understanding of various enterprise devices and be able to install, patch and apply basic configs.

  • Hardware knowledge from a variety of manufactures including Cisco, HP, Checkpoint, F5 and Riverbed.

  • Ability to adhere to strict data centre guidelines and processes.

  • Intermediate computer skills with the ability to utilize computerised work order systems and inventory tracking.
