The Role

At Hiscox, we are recognized for our expertise in underwriting Professional Indemnity, Cyber, Property, and Casualty lines and as part of our strategic expansion, Hiscox seeks to fortify its presence into the mid-market sector, replicating our success in underwriting the complex policies our competitors lack the expertise to venture into.

In this pivotal role, the Mid Market Underwriter will be instrumental in driving Hiscox UK’s profitable growth. You will underwrite large, complex cases, generating considerable Gross Written Premium (GWP), and upholding the same high standards of risk management Hiscox is known for.

Key responsibilities include:

• Expertly securing new and existing high-value risks, providing top-tier underwriting for complex exposures in familiar risk categories.
• Concentrating on high-value policies in the mid-market sector, with a focus on maximizing GWP from significant risks in the UK.
• Leading by example, influencing other underwriters, and exerting a broader impact within your field of expertise at a national level.

What You’ll Be Doing:

• Significantly contributing to growth through strategic underwriting in the mid-market sector.
• Acting as a brand ambassador, renowned for your underwriting expertise in Hiscox’s established risk categories.
• Leading underwriting and sales visits to key clients and prospects.
• Possessing deep knowledge of your area of specialization, including understanding sector trends and competitive dynamics.
• Imparting expertise through coaching and training, enhancing our mid-market capabilities.
• Building and maintaining strategic broker relationships, ensuring a robust market presence in the mid-market sector.
• Influencing underwriting and pricing strategies, aligning with Hiscox’s expansion goals.

Our Must-Haves

• An excellent understanding of UK retail business and underwriting larger more complex risks
• In-depth expertise in your specialized field
• Excellent knowledge of the insurance market, industry, competitors, Brokers and factors that can affect the market including soft/hard markets
• Ideally ACII qualified or exempt through relevant experience as defined by the FCA
• Excellent relationship management and sales skills
• Ability to lead by example in all professional activities.
• Leads underwriting and sales visits to larger clients and prospects
• Coaches and mentors less experienced underwriters in underwriting and sales skills
