Job Summary

The Data Center Mechanical Design Manager is responsible for leading the mechanical design of mission-critical data center projects across Europe, including HVAC, plumbing, drainage, and related building mechanical systems.

This role ensures mechanical systems are reliable, scalable, maintainable, energy-efficient, and well integrated with the wider data center infrastructure. The Mechanical Design Manager works closely with internal teams, local consultants, contractors, vendors, authorities, and operations stakeholders to deliver coordinated, compliant, and high-quality design solutions.

The role is key to ensuring DayOne’s mechanical infrastructure meets company standards, applicable European and local regulations, authority requirements, industry best practice, sustainability targets, and end-user expectations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Mechanical Design Oversight: Lead the mechanical design process for data center projects, including HVAC, plumbing, drainage, and related systems.

  • Cooling and Thermal Performance: Oversee cooling architecture, heat rejection, chilled water systems, airflow management, redundancy, energy efficiency, and maintainability.

  • Multidisciplinary Coordination: Coordinate mechanical interfaces with electrical, architectural, civil, structural, fire protection, ELV, controls, operations, consultants, contractors, vendors, and project stakeholders.

  • Technical Leadership: Provide technical guidance to ensure mechanical solutions are reliable, scalable, efficient, maintainable, and aligned with project and operational needs.

  • Design Review and Quality Assurance: Review drawings, specifications, calculations, equipment schedules, technical proposals, and design documents for completeness, accuracy, coordination, constructability, and maintainability.

  • Standards and Compliance: Ensure designs comply with DayOne standards, industry standards, local regulations, authority requirements, sustainability targets, and end-user requirements.

  • Vendor and Supplier Coordination: Review mechanical equipment, systems, materials, and technologies against project needs, reliability, energy performance, maintainability, and lifecycle expectations.

  • Risk and Issue Resolution: Identify risks, resolve technical issues, and support decisions related to design, constructability, installation, commissioning, handover, and operational readiness.

Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Building Services Engineering, HVAC Engineering, or a related technical field; a Master’s degree is a plus.

  • Experience: Minimum 8–10 years of mechanical, HVAC, cooling, hydronic, or building services design experience, preferably in hyperscale, colocation, cloud infrastructure, or other mission-critical data center environments.

  • Technical Skills: Strong understanding of data center mechanical systems, including HVAC, cooling infrastructure, chilled water, hydronic networks, heat rejection, airflow management, ventilation, plumbing, drainage, and thermal performance.

  • Design and Documentation: Experience with mechanical equipment selection, specifications, calculations, design reviews, technical documentation, and coordination of complex design workstreams.

  • Standards and Performance: Good knowledge of mechanical, HVAC, building services, sustainability, energy efficiency, PUE, reliability, redundancy, maintainability, data center standards, local regulations, and authority requirements.

  • Certifications: Professional Engineer, Chartered Engineer of mechanical or equivalent certification is preferred.

  • Coordination and Leadership: Ability to coordinate across multidisciplinary teams, consultants, contractors, vendors, internal teams, and project stakeholders with strong organizational and leadership skills.

  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written English communication skills are required; proficiency in any second European language is preferred.

  • Problem-Solving: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify risks, resolve technical issues, and support design, coordination, commissioning, and handover activities.
