In Johnson Matthey, Platinum Group Metal Services (PGMS) manages, distributes, refines and recycles precious metals and fabricates products using precious metals and related materials.  The business unit manufactures platinum group metals salts and catalysts, heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysts and other metal products for high technology applications. In addition, it provides a range of PGM metal management services for its customers.

As the Market Research Manager, you will manage a global market research team specialising in industrial demand applications, in support of the Group’s Precious Group Metal Services (PGMS) functions and provide market research advice to other parts of the Johnson Matthey Group.

This role would welcome someone with a technical background, with existing knowledge of Platinum Group Metals.

The role:

  • Manage and develop a team of analysts with the aim of delivering a coherent near and long-term view of PGM demand in industrial applications (chemicals, electronics, petroleum refining, glass, dental, (bio)medical and ‘other’ smaller industrial applications).

  • Use existing models, and develop new models where appropriate, to analyse complex business and technical indicators, and to forecast future demand for PGM for specific applications and regions, as allocated by the Market Research Director. To report significant developments to the Market Research team, to draw conclusions, and give advice and recommendations based on analysis.

  • To become subject matter expert (Team Leader) for designated applications, taking ownership of sector teams’ global PGM forecasts to drive a deeper understanding of specific market dynamics and potential sensitivities to PGM demand and/or supply.

  • Continually evaluate the industrial research priorities of the team, establishing clear direction of near and medium-term focus, redistributing and allocating resource as necessary.

  • Manage the translation of core market research into strategic insight in support of JM’s strategic aims, guiding and coordinating the development of methodologies for closed-loop recycling analysis, projections of refining volumes and product demand, lead evaluation and quantification of potential responses to price trends (scenario analysis).

  • Prepare and present bespoke presentations and reports or briefings in areas of interest impacting current and future PGM use or supply.

Key skills/qualifications that will help you succeed in this role:

  • Educated to degree level in a relevant technical discipline (PGM Related Chemistry highly desirable)

  • Have PGM and/or market research experience

  • Well-developed numerical and analytical ability

  • Excellent communications ability, both in writing and in presenting

  • Proven ability to develop comprehensive forecasting models

  • Have experience managing a team and coaching others

  • Have in-depth understanding of broader PGM supply-demand fundamentals (Desirable)

  • Understanding of industrial sectors including chemical processes, electrochemistry, electronics (Desirable)
