Job Specification
The Opportunity:

ING is a Dutch multinational banking and financial services business headquartered in Amsterdam with more than 60,000 employees and operations in over 40 countries.

Our UK business is focussed exclusively on Wholesale Banking and serves a multinational client base across a wide range of sectors and industries.  Our office is situated in the heart of the City of London and occupies a modern building with first class facilities including onsite gym, coffee bar and staff restaurant.

The UK Lending business provides loan facilities to a broad range of clients across various sectors which include (but are not limited to) Infrastructure, Shipping and Real Estate. Our Lending team is split into two sub-teams: 

  • Transaction Management (TM) is responsible for all aspects of new lending activity from structuring the transaction, undertaking due diligence and analysis, preparing credit papers and, post credit approval co-ordinating legal documentation and liaising with other departments to facilitate funding

  • Portfolio Management (PM) is divided into two sub-teams, Acquisition Finance PM (covering all leveraged and structured corporate finance deals) and Sector PM (monitoring the sector-based lending exposures). They are responsible for managing our large and diverse portfolio of loans which includes monitoring the performance of individual transactions via detailed analysis and seeking to optimise portfolio returns.  The team is also responsible for ensuring that all regulatory and risk management requirements are met.

This is an exciting opportunity to join our Lending intern scheme and get first-hand experience in Transaction and Portfolio Management.  Alongside other interns, you will join a fast paced and challenging environment and be exposed to senior colleagues from day 1.  Throughout the 12-month period you will be on a steep learning curve to understand the Lending business and contribute to live transactions.  You will be mentored and trained by experts in their field and your strong analytical skills will be tested from the outset.

Although we have a hybrid approach to office attendance, to benefit fully from the opportunity, you will be expected to be in the office at least 4 days each week.

What’s in it for you?

  • You will spend up to six months in both Transaction Management and one or both of the Portfolio Management teams

  • You will receive full training to facilitate that you will be an active team member from the outset. 

  • You will learn about the Lending business, various sectors/industries that we do business with and understand the full life cycle of the lending product.

  • You will work closely with colleagues both in London and international locations and also have exposure to the work of other teams.  At the end of the 12-month period you will have a good understanding of how a Wholesale Bank works and be comfortable with engaging with other stakeholders e.g. risk management.

  • Learn about the practical requirements of initiating a new Lending transaction and / or managing a complex portfolio of lending assets.

Main Duties and Responsibilities could include some of the following:

  • Reviewing and challenging due diligence materials / reports received from clients

  • Preparing written analysis and contributing to credit papers

  • Assisting with monitoring the loan book and proactively looking for risks and signs of credit deterioration

  • Contributing to projects

Candidate Profile
Qualification/Education

  • A recent graduate or graduating in summer 2025 with a minimum 2:1 degree in a business-related subject e.g. Finance, Economics or a subject with a strong analytical component.

  • Strong A-level (or equivalent) results 

Experience/Knowledge
Essential:

  • Previous workplace experience via either relevant industrial placement or summer internship

  • Highly competent with Microsoft Office programs, specifically Excel.

  • Strong interest in financial analysis and understanding of financial statements/accounts.

  • Strong report writing skills

  • Evidence of being a team player plus ability to work independently to meet tight deadlines
