Department Description

HL Learn, the global Learning and Development team, is part of the firm’s People function and supports the firm’s People strategy across each of the firm’s regions (Americas, APAC and EMEA) through a range of global, regional, and local development programs, workshops, e-learning, and other career development activities. Within HL Learn the Legal Learning team are responsible for practice-specific and technical, legal training initiatives.

Role Overview

The Legal Learning Manager will be a member of the HL Learn Legal Learning team, responsible for managing lawyers’ access to online training content on HL Learning Hub, including regularly auditing and refreshing Legal Learning materials and resources. The Legal Learning Manager will support specific practice area training for junior lawyers in the UK, with a broader global remit to develop and implement substantive legal training that dovetails with practice-specific programming in the firm’s other regions. The Legal Learning Manager will collaborate with relevant partners and Knowledge Lawyers, the Regional Heads of Knowledge, other key stakeholders, and colleagues across the People function including the Practice Group HR Leads, the wider HL Learn team, and the Talent Management and HRIS teams.

Key Responsibilities / Accountabilities

  • Manage lawyers’ access to online training content on HL Learning Hub, including regularly auditing and refreshing Legal Learning materials and resources.
  • Collaborate with the firm’s lawyers, Knowledge Lawyers, and external providers to design and deliver Legal Learning digital courses and resources, and in person and virtual-live workshops for entry-level and established legal knowledge and skills development.
  • Build relationships with key stakeholders across the firm’s offices globally, to ensure all regions and jurisdictions are represented in Legal Learning programming.
  • Conduct post-program/ workshop/ session evaluations to monitor and determine their effectiveness and value, and areas for improvement.
  • Support in the management and development of the Legal Learning Coordinators, providing feedback on an ongoing basis and promoting a continuous learning and knowledge-sharing culture where individual and team learning is nurtured, valued, and used.
  • Maintain and monitor training budgets, and support the Head of Legal Learning with the annual budget process.
  • Keep up-to-date with education, law firm business, digital learning, and AI trends, and legal developments.
  • Participate in HL Learn projects and initiatives as and when required.
  • All members of the firm participate in our Responsible Business program.

Person Specification

Qualifications & Training

  • 5+ years of experience of designing and delivering online and in person training programs in a law firm or equivalent professional services environment.
  • A qualification in learning and development and/or instructional design is preferred.

General Attributes

  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
  • Experience working independently as well as within cross-functional teams in a collaborative, fast-paced, professional environment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to motivate and persuade lawyers to contribute to legal training and to adhere to instructional design principles and HL Learn processes.
  • Ability to understand and work with local variations, including how to adapt to different legislative, language, and learning environment requirements.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while adhering to deadlines, and promptly responsive to requests for assistance or information.
  • Self-motivated with demonstrated ability to exercise initiative and effectively prioritize tasks.
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office.
