Purpose of the role

To help ensure that the Cyber, Data, IP & Emerging Tech Legal activities are conducted in compliance with applicable laws and regulations, and to help the bank manage legal and reputational risks associated with these activities. 

Accountabilities

  • Development and implementation of best practice legal strategies for risk management and compliance.
  • Legal advice and support to the business on cybersecurity, data privacy, intellectual property (IP) and emerging tech matters, including  cybersecurity and data privacy incidents, IP protection and technology deployment.
  • Representation of the bank in legal proceedings related to cybersecurity, data privacy, IP protection and emerging tech, such as litigation, arbitration, and regulatory investigations.
  • Creation and review of legal documents such as data protection policies, cybersecurity protocols, IP licenses and emerging tech policies to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Legal research and analysis to stay up to date on changes in laws and regulations that may impact the bank's cybersecurity, data privacy, IP protection and emerging tech practices.
  • Developing and delivering training programmes to educate employees on legal and regulatory requirements related to cybersecurity, data privacy, IP protection and emerging tech.
  • Pro-active identification, communication, and provision of legal advice on applicable laws, rules and regulations (LRRs). Keeping up to date with regards to changes to LRRs in the relevant coverage area. Ensuring that LRRs are effectively allocated to, and adequately reflected within, the relevant policies, standards and controls.

They will identify new directions for assignments and/ or projects, identifying a combination of cross functional methodologies or practices to meet required outcomes.
  • Consult on complex issues; providing advice to People Leaders to support the resolution of escalated issues.
  • Identify ways to mitigate risk and developing new policies/procedures in support of the control and governance agenda.
  • Take ownership for managing risk and strengthening controls in relation to the work done.
  • Perform work that is closely related to that of other areas, which requires understanding of how areas coordinate and contribute to the achievement of the objectives of the organisation sub-function.
  • Collaborate with other areas of work, for business aligned support areas to keep up to speed with business activity and the business strategy.
  • Engage in complex analysis of data from multiple sources of information, internal and external sources such as procedures and practises (in other areas, teams, companies, etc).to solve problems creatively and effectively.
  • Communicate complex information. 'Complex' information could include sensitive information or information that is difficult to communicate because of its content or its audience.
  • Influence or convince stakeholders to achieve outcomes.

As an Emerging Tech Legal Counsel AVP at Barclays, you will work in a team at the cutting edge of legal issues and their intersection with new technologies. You’ll provide advice on the adoption of AL and DLT Technologies by Barclays, it’s suppliers and Clients along with closely advising on laws, rules and regulations in this space. This role will also involve working closely with Barclays’ AI Risk, GenAI Centre of Excellence, Chief Controls Office, Chief Security Office and Compliance on design, implementation and testing of strategy, governance, risk and control processes as they relate to AI and other emerging technologies. Other role responsibilities include, supporting colleagues in Commercial Legal and M&A Legal teams with interpretation and negotiation of contracts and provide some training and upskilling to the wider legal function.

To be successful as an Emerging Tech Legal Counsel AVP, you should have:

  • Qualified lawyer with in-house or law-firm experience

  • Experience and/or strong interest in emerging technologies, data and/or intellectual property

Some other highly valued skills may include:

  • Experience interpreting and advising on AI, Digital Assets or other technology aligned LRRs as applied to a control environment 

  • Background in a relevant area of law, such as IP, data privacy, cyber security, financial services, Cloud or TMT  

  • Experience negotiating with AI/software vendors

  • Experience working in cross-functional teams on build out and deployment of governance programmes

You may be assessed on key critical skills relevant for success in the role, such as risk and controls, change and transformation, business acumen, strategic thinking and digital and technology, as well as job-specific technical skills.

This role can located in Glasgow, Birmingham or Manchester.
