The Lead Data Scientist is a senior, hands-on role responsible for designing, building, and owning data science and complex optimisation models within an operations decision-support product suite.
This role requires deep expertise in Operational Research and optimisation, combined with strong communication skills to engage directly with business stakeholders. You will take end-to-end ownership of analytical features, ensuring they integrate seamlessly into the wider technical stack and real operational processes to maximise impact and value.
Please note this role operates in a hybrid model with candidates expected to be able and willing to work from our customer's London office three times per week.
Required Experience:
- Recent, hands-on commercial experience with Operational Research and optimisation
- Strong experience with optimisation techniques: linear, non-linear, mixed-integer programming, constraint-based optimisation, scheduling
- Strong Python expertise with optimisation and data libraries (SciPy, OR-Tools, Gurobi, CPLEX, Pandas, NumPy)
- Solid data engineering skills (SQL, data pipelines, data quality)
- Experience productionising models using cloud platforms (AWS preferred), workflow orchestration, experiment tracking, and CI/CD
- Background in operations-heavy industries preferred (aviation, logistics, supply chain, manufacturing, retail)
- Strong commercial mindset focused on solving real operational business problems
- Excellent communication skills with confidence, engaging non-technical stakeholders
- Comfortable working independently in fast-paced, stakeholder-facing environments
- Experience coordinating across multiple teams or workstreams
Key responsibilities & duties include:
- Design, build, and own data science and optimisation solutions across operational domains such as workforce planning, scheduling, and supply chain
- Own use cases end-to-end: problem definition, modelling, experimentation, and production delivery
- Act as a senior technical lead, ensuring high-quality analytical and modelling output across teams
- Coordinate across multiple teams and data science workstreams to align approaches and ensure quality
- Prototype and industrialise machine learning and optimisation models in Python, following software engineering best practices
- Build and maintain robust data pipelines, including data cleaning, validation, testing, logging, and CI/CD
- Diagnose model performance, identify trade-offs, and optimise solutions for real-world operational constraints
- Engage directly with business stakeholders to frame the right analytical solutions
- Communicate technical findings and recommendations clearly to non-technical audiences
- Contribute to roadmap and prioritisation discussions, balancing speed vs long-term value
- Work independently within a small, high-performing, stakeholder-facing team
Desirable Experience:
- Advanced degree (Master's or PhD) in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics or a related discipline
- Background in consulting, advisory, or professional services environment
- Experience working across multiple business domains or geographies
- Exposure to regulated, safety-critical or asset-intensive industries
- Experience establishing best practices, standards or frameworks for Data Science delivery
- Strong interest in ethical, transparent and responsible AI
