Who we are
Apollo is a specialised, independent (re)insurer operating at Lloyd’s, established in 2009 with a clear ambition: to deliver high-quality underwriting, service and partnerships in a market that values expertise and trust.
The name Apollo reflects our origins. Inspired by founding investor Neil Armstrong — the first person to walk on the moon — the business was built with the same pioneering mindset. Alongside Jim Hays, Neil saw an opportunity to create a different kind of Lloyd’s platform: focused, agile and built around people.
Since launch, Apollo has evolved into a diversified insurance group. Today, our offering spans traditional and specialty lines through Apollo 1969, innovative sharing-economy solutions via ibott 1971, and managing agency services for Platform Partner Syndicates at Lloyd’s.
With a global team of more than 300 professionals, we continue to grow with purpose, combining underwriting excellence, innovation and collaboration to support our mission of enabling a more resilient and sustainable world.
“We attract and retain diverse talent by creating an inclusive environment where people are empowered to grow, succeed and do their best work. By fostering excellence and forward-thinking, we aim to enable a resilient and sustainable world.” David Ibeson, Group CEO

Your Role

Apollo is strengthening its engineering capability as we continue to modernise our digital estate. As Lead Application Engineer, you will take a central role in shaping how applications are designed, built, and supported across Apollo. You will combine technical expertise with leadership, guiding standards, influencing technology choices, and ensuring teams deliver secure, scalable, high-quality solutions.

You will work across application architecture, engineering best practice, modern delivery methods, and cloud-native development. This is a hands-on leadership role where you will define engineering patterns, improve tooling and automation, and enable consistent, reliable, well-designed applications that support Apollo’s growth.

What You Will Do

  • Define the technical vision for application engineering, ensuring robust standards and clear architectural direction.
  • Lead design and development of scalable frameworks, APIs, integration models, and user experiences.
  • Review and approve complex technical designs, supporting delivery teams with planning, estimation, and best practice.
  • Champion automation, secure coding, observability, and performance optimisation across all applications.
  • Mentor Application Engineers and support recruitment, onboarding, and development of talent within the team.
  • Work closely with Product Owners, Digital Leads, and stakeholders to translate business needs into effective technical solutions.
  • Strengthen governance, lifecycle management, reliability, and resilience across the application estate.
  • Identify opportunities to improve tooling, architecture, and engineering practices; reduce technical debt; and enhance automation.

What We Are Looking For

  • Experience building, deploying, and maintaining secure and well-documented software in regulated environments; both hands-on and in leadership roles.
  • Extensive experience with .NET/C#, React, Azure Data Factory, and Azure SQL.
  • Proven ability in designing and delivering cloud-native applications using IaC techniques such as Terraform.
  • Strong experience building and operating API-driven architectures.
  • Proficiency with containerisation technologies, including Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Strong knowledge of application security, identity management, and performance optimisation.
  • Experience mentoring or leading engineers with strong communication, collaboration, and influence.
  • Understanding of integration architecture and data modelling.
  • Experience improving and maturing engineering practices.

What you’ll get in return
We offer a competitive and thoughtfully designed reward package that reflects the value of our people. This includes a fair and attractive salary, discretionary bonus, and a comprehensive benefits package - including 31 days’ annual leave, a non-contributory pension and private medical insurance.
Our commitment to inclusion
At Apollo, people are at the heart of everything we do. We are a diverse, growing team of empowered experts who bring collaboration, innovation and data-driven thinking to every relationship and every risk.
We believe diversity and inclusion go far beyond targets. They are essential to understanding the global communities we serve and to making better decisions. That’s why we are committed to developing diverse talent at every level and creating an environment where different perspectives are genuinely valued, supported and celebrated.
We also run a programme of events, training and initiatives designed to recognise both the challenges and opportunities that come with building an inclusive workplace.
Hybrid & flexible working
Flexible and hybrid working are fully embraced at Apollo. We do not believe in presenteeism. Instead, we trust our people to work in ways that allow them to perform at their best, balancing professional responsibilities with personal commitments.
Supporting your application
Apollo is committed to providing an inclusive and supportive recruitment experience. Our process typically includes a combination of virtual (Microsoft Teams) and in-person interviews.
If there’s anything we can do to support you or make the process more accessible, please let us know, including sharing any adjustments in advance or on the day via Clear Talents.
