The Tech Dev team owns the research and deployment of technical initiatives across Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE). The wide gamut of requirements from the different business sectors within SPE requires people within this team to have a broad set of skills, from upstream data analytics to practical hands-on Production/Post-Production experience.

As part of our growth, we are looking for an enthusiastic Junior Full Stack Developer to join our Innovation Team. This role is a great opportunity for someone who is eager to delve into the world of full-stack development, machine learning, and ground-breaking technologies in the media field.

As a Junior Full Stack JavaScript Developer, you will contribute to developing proof-of-concept projects. The emphasis is on building end-to-end solutions that provide value for our collaborators, customers, partners, and team members. Their work will involve building and deploying full-stack applications, integration with machine learning workflows, performing technical research, and exploring novel ideas that push the boundaries of the media industry. The candidate will collaborate closely with the lead engineer and be involved in the development of features for both existing and future projects.

The candidate must be willing to work in multiple time zones depending on specific project requirements. This would likely be Japan and West Coast US time within reason.

Mentorship: Work under the guidance of the lead engineer of the innovation team, receiving mentorship and support to grow into a full-stack engineer capable of end-to-end PoC development.

What you'll do:

  • Full Stack Development: Develop and maintain features for various end-to-end applications, involving heavy use of React, Python, and integration into cloud services (AWS).
  • Proof-of-Concepts: Be involved in meetings with teams from across the studio, understand their problems and work collaboratively to design, build and deploy proof of concept solutions.
  • Innovative Solutions: Stay up to date with industry trends and contribute novel ideas related to media distribution, production, and post-production to improve our technological capabilities.
  • Infrastructure Management: Learn and apply Terraform for managing infrastructure-as-code and assist in setting up AWS environments.
  • CI/CD: Develop an understanding of Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) practices and tools and apply them to streamline development workflows.
  • Machine Learning Ops: Engage in projects involving MLOps, assisting with tasks relating to the integration and deployment of models in end-to-end solutions.

What you have:Knowledge of:

  • Proficiency in JavaScript and related frameworks (e.g. Next.js, React).
  • Basic understanding of Python and willingness to learn.
  • Familiarity with AWS services, including EC2, Lambda and various databases.
  • Comfortable with UNIX systems and a working understanding of Bash.
  • Experience working with full-stack applications.
  • Understanding of machine learning concepts.
  • Curiosity about Infrastructure-as-code with Terraform and CI/CD practices
  • Typically 3+ years of commercial or academic experience developing in both a back end and front end programming language or framework, ideally in media related or media pipeline development role.

  • Creative problem-solving abilities and a passion for innovation in the media industry.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively within a team.
  • Chair meetings, capture actions and minutes accordingly.
  • Ability to assess and understand business needs and requirements of key stakeholders.
  • Eagerness to learn and grow into a full-stack engineer role.
  • Document work in a professional manner.

Language skills:

  • The candidate should be fluent in English; other languages beneficial but not necessary.
