What is Aladdin and Aladdin Engineering (AE)? 

You will be working on BlackRock's investment operating system Aladdin. Aladdin is used both internally and externally by many financial institutions. Aladdin combines sophisticated risk analytics with comprehensive portfolio management, trading and operations tools on a single platform to power informed decision-making and create a connective tissue for thousands of users investing worldwide. 

Our development team sits inside Aladdin Engineering. We collaboratively build the next generation of technology that changes the way information, people, and technology intersect for global investment firms. We build and package tools that manage trillions of assets and support millions of financial instruments. We perform risk calculations and process millions of transactions for thousands of users every day worldwide! 

The open position is in the Investment and Trading Engineering team within Aladdin Engineering. The team is on a ground-breaking journey from a mature set of applications to an integrated persona-based platform with streamlined user workflows and a high degree of automation and scale. The team works closely with BlackRock portfolio managers, traders and investment compliance officers and delivers to external clients. They also partner closely with world-class AI research and engineering teams, product managers, UX designers, quality assurance engineers, and client support teams to deliver high-quality, scalable and resilient capabilities.

About the role: 

  • Take ownership of individual project priorities, deadlines and deliverables using AGILE methodologies. 

  • Deliver high efficiency, high availability, concurrent and fault tolerant software systems. 

  • Contribute to the development of Aladdin’s global, multi-asset trading platform. 

  • Provide impact and expertise as an individual contributor to greenfield work developing the AI capabilities of the portfolio management system. 

  • Work with product management, business users and QA to deliver the AI roadmap. 

  • Design and develop innovative solutions to complex problems, identifying issues and roadblocks. 

  • Maintain and evolve AI/ML models, maximising and contributing powerful technologies/ infrastructure. 

  • Demonstrate vision when brainstorming solutions for team productivity, and efficiency, guiding and motivating developers. 

About you: 

  • 2+ years of hands-on experience in Java. 

  • Knowledge is Python is preferred but not essential. 

  • Previous experience or academic knowledge related to AI/ML models is preferred. 

  • Interest in Gen-AI, distributed systems, and infrastructure services. 

  • Fluency in concurrent programming and the design of high throughput, high availability, fault-tolerant distributed applications. 

  • Experience in building distributed applications using SQL and/or NoSQL technologies such as MS SQL, Sybase, Cassandra, or Redis. 

  • Prior experience with message brokers like Kafka or messaging frameworks such as gRPC. 

  • Knowledge of modern front-end frameworks such as React, Vue.js, or Angular is a plus. 

  • A strong understanding of relational databases is essential. 

  • Excellent analytical and software architecture design skills, with an emphasis on test-driven development. 

  • Effective communication and presentation skills, both written and verbal. 

  • Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Computer Science or Engineering preferred.
