The Investment & Commercial Manager is a key member of the Sphere Energy Connect (Sphere) business, reporting to the Head of Commercial, with responsibility for providing financial analysis and recommendations on investment opportunities for all new connection developments in all segments; such as domestic, Public EV Charge Points and I&C connections. The role holder is responsible for quantifying the economic business case and presenting clear and concise information to Sphere Leadership Teams and Executives, both locally and globally, to facilitate Final Investment Decisions on million-pound projects. This work also includes financial analysis and due diligence of acquisition opportunities that will be considered to strengthen our market positioning and customer proposition to achieve the strategic aims of the business.
There is a strong commercial focus to this role with the Investment & Commercial Manager tasked with financially optimising Sphere investment opportunities and identifying ways to maximise our connection development projects competitiveness to secure a pipeline of connections in a highly competitive environment, providing the revenues stream required to support Sphere’s enduring investments and growth plans. This role is responsible for developing and maintaining the financial models, asset value calculations and associated IRRs for the business to ensure target returns are delivered.
The Investment & Commercial Manager undertakes a key stakeholder management role on behalf of Sphere regarding investment proposals with multiple Corporate functions (Control; Tax; Treasury; Insurance; Legal; Procurement; Risk Management; Compliance) to ensure Sphere’s investment proposals are clearly communicated; well understood and ultimately supported by these wider stakeholders throughout the governance / approval process, securing the significant funding to fulfil our growth ambitions.
What you’ll be doing
Investment Decision Making & Financial Strategy
Lead evaluation, risk assessment, and approval of all investment proposals, ensuring alignment with strategic plans and compliance with governance requirements.
Provide financial insight, challenge assumptions, and optimise project economics to secure a strong pipeline and maximise returns.
Model and assess acquisition opportunities and maintain financial models to deliver target IRRs.
Prepare financial forecasts, budgets, and business plans for the Sphere business.
Strategic Analysis & Business Performance
Conduct competitor and market analysis, recommending strategies to enhance project competitiveness.
Identify opportunities for portfolio growth, joint ventures, and improved economic outcomes.
Monitor business performance, report to leadership, and provide insights to support strategic decision‑making.
Coordinate delivery of the Strategic Business Plan and support Investor Relations activities.
Governance & Compliance
Lead Post Investment Reviews and evaluate financial performance against assumptions, recommending improvements.
Interpret policy and regulatory changes to assess financial impacts and advise on mitigation or opportunities.
Manage stakeholder engagement across corporate functions and prepare documentation for governance approvals.
Leadership & Team Development
Provide clear leadership, promoting strong investment decision‑making practices across the business.
Foster collaboration across teams and stakeholders, supporting a high‑performing, motivated team culture.
Set objectives, provide feedback, and support staff development to ensure effective delivery of business goals.
What you’ll bring
Highly numerate, ideally a Qualified Accountant or equivalent (e.g., MBA) with substantial post‑qualification managerial experience.
Strong financial modelling expertise, particularly in valuing connection assets and assessing large‑scale investment opportunities.
High commercial awareness, including understanding asset values, depreciation, and contract structures.
Proven leadership experience managing teams and stakeholders across complex investment proposals.
Strong communicator with the ability to simplify complex financial information for senior leaders.
Skilled in influencing, challenging constructively, and making sound commercial judgements.
Experience leading multi‑disciplinary teams to optimise financial outcomes across multiple projects.
Ability to balance competing priorities while maintaining high standards and meeting ambitious growth targets.
