We believe in the power of unique perspectives and want all voices in our organisation to be heard, respected and valued. A supportive workplace is one where employees feel they can be themselves and operate to their full potential. We are committed to removing barriers for everyone, with a focus on addressing those faced by underrepresented groups.

 The role

The Financial Times is seeking an ambitious journalist to oversee international economy coverage on the World News Desk in London. This is a rare opportunity to steer and edit our economics and trade reporting at a time of profound change in the global economy and the institutions that shape it.

Sound judgement, an eye for hidden stories and the confidence to independently handle complex breaking news are essential. The position is perfect for both editors with reporting experience, or UK-based reporters looking for a stepping stone into the FT’s international network. It requires enterprising commissioning, calmness under pressure, and assured copy editing.

Key responsibilities

  • Drive coverage of the European economics and the European Central Bank
  • Oversee reporting on international trade and the upheaval from Donald Trump’s tariff policies
  • Collaborate with our global economics team to cover key institutions such as the IMF and World Bank
  • Oversee coverage of macroeconomic themes, including international tax, labour markets, and demographic shifts
  • Develop compelling, data-driven stories that illuminate global economic developments
  • Present when required the day’s top global stories at newsroom meetings
  • Contribute to Sunday coverage as part of the World Desk’s rota

 What we’re looking for

  • A collaborative editor who can work seamlessly with colleagues across the FT’s global network, particularly in our European bureaux.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills with a sharp instinct for stories that matter to FT readers
  • A strong grasp of economic institutions and experience in economics journalism is an advantage
  • The ability to generate ideas for charts and graphics, working closely with our data and visual team in London

Please submit your application by the end of the day, Tuesday 4th March 2025.

The use of AI

Original reporting, great writing and intelligent commentary lie at the heart of FT journalism.  Our readers trust us to produce quality journalism that is accurate, fair and insightful. This is why FT editorial staff do not use artificial intelligence (AI) tools to write articles or create other reader-facing content. For specific and pre-approved cases, AI can be harnessed for certain tasks, such as assisting data research for investigations.

We expect applicants to the FT newsroom to refrain from using AI in their test submissions, and any written materials should be a genuine reflection of their own knowledge, skills and experiences. We encourage candidates only to employ AI as a tool to help with research and interview readiness for a role.

Candidates should be aware that the use of AI throughout the application process is monitored to ensure a fair and transparent hiring process for all.
