The team:
The Current Accounts team have been working hard building a new Current Account product from scratch. Made up of four squads this team have built an innovate product currently being tested by over 35k customers and have big plans to fully launch in summer 2025.
The role:
This is an opportunity to build an entire new product in Zopa Bank’s portfolio. The role will lead all engineering for Current Accounts – from the in-house build of all services to the integration of any third-party vendors. The role will work in collaboration with other engineering peers and be accountable for the delivery and launch of the product, as well as its full integration into the Zopa platform. Experience in the domain of Current Accounts or payments is a big advantage.
You will work directly with other senior roles and stakeholders in the same tribe and across the company, leading a team of Backend Engineers and Mobile Engineers organised in multiple squads. Reporting directly to the VP of Engineering you will play an important part in shaping the strategy for your area and across the engineering function at Zopa. As well as this, you will be responsible for leading and developing your team, supporting their career, and charting a path for their success. This role will be based 2-3 days a week in our London Bridge office.
The tech:
Zopa uses a modern tech stack to deliver the reliability and performance our customers expect from their bank. The backend stack comprises Kotlin, Apache Kafka, Docker, Kubernetes, AWS Aurora Postgres and Jenkins. We don’t expect you to have expertise in all of these technologies, but you should know enough to make strategic choices and challenge team decisions.
A day in the life:
- Lead the technical strategy for the domain
- Provide clear team objectives and help your team create a roadmap for the work they do
- Collaborate with Product stakeholders to make sure the team’s work aligns with company priorities
- Directly manage several Engineering Managers, and make sure they lead productive and successful teams
- Support your direct reports through 1:1s, personal objectives, coaching and guidance
- Participate in company-wide initiatives with your peers (other Heads of Engineering and Technical leaders) to evolve, develop and improve the way the whole technology organisation operates
- Hold a high bar for engineering excellence and assess how your team can achieve it
- Ensure the team strikes a healthy balance between feature development, technical debt, and non-functional requirements
About you:
- You have a background with Software Engineering.
- Proven track record of success in building and leading the development of software solutions
- Experience working in a fast-paced environment
- You embrace uncertainty and always seek opportunities to change the status quo
- Passionate about engineering leadership and take pride in developing others
- Leading with empathy and care, but you challenge the people around you to perform at their best and always strive for excellence
- You are ambitious and results focused
- Focused on achieving the best possible customer outcomes, taking a robust but pragmatic approach to engineering challenges

Towards the end of 2025 Zopa will be relocating to a brand-new headquarters at 20 Water Street in Canary Wharf. The 44,000 square foot workspace will foster collaboration and inspire creativity for our 900 employees amidst our 2025 growth blitz.
