Who we are
Apollo, a Skyward Group company, is an innovation-inspired insurance platform operating at Lloyd’s of London, delivering data-driven and creative solutions across a broad range of risks.
Our name reflects our origins. Inspired by one of our founding investors, Neil Armstrong, the first person to walk on the moon, the business was built with the same pioneering mindset. Alongside Jim Hays, Neil set out to create a different kind of Lloyd’s platform, focused, agile and built around people.
Since launch in 2009, we have grown into a diversified insurance group offering products across Property, Casualty, Marine, Energy and Transportation, Specialty and Reinsurance, alongside Smart Follow and digital and embedded risk programmes. Our experience and unique ecosystem give Platform Partners the best chance of success, from navigating the Lloyd’s new entrant process through to the delivery of their long-term strategy.
With a team of more than 300 professionals, we continue to grow with purpose, combining underwriting excellence, innovation and collaboration to enable a more resilient and sustainable world.
Your Role
As Head of Product Engineering, you will lead the engineering capability that powers Apollo’s product led digital strategy. This role sits at the centre of our product centric operating model, where engineering excellence directly enables better underwriting insight, data driven decision making, and intelligent risk products.
You will lead engineering capability across application development, data engineering, and AI and machine learning (AI/ML), ensuring our teams have the platforms, standards, and professional environment needed to deliver exceptional products. Engineers operate within product teams across the business, and your role is to build the engineering ecosystem that allows those teams to succeed, combining strong delivery capability with long term engineering excellence.
Alongside delivery, you will shape Apollo’s engineering culture. You will develop high performing engineering communities, create consistent technical standards, and ensure the tools, platforms, and practices in place allow engineers to build high quality, scalable and reliable products. This is a leadership role for someone who believes deeply in collaborative product development and enabling talented engineers to do their best work.
What You’ll Do
You will lead and develop Apollo’s product engineering capability, bringing together software development, data engineering, and AI/ML disciplines into a unified engineering community with shared standards and practices.
You will line manage and develop engineers across the organisation, supporting career growth, mentoring engineering leaders, and building an environment where technical talent can thrive. Creating strong communities of practice across engineering disciplines will be central to this, encouraging knowledge sharing, professional development, and continuous improvement.
You will establish and evolve the engineering platforms and tooling that support product delivery, including development frameworks, data platforms, CI/CD pipelines, testing approaches, and engineering quality standards. Your focus will be on ensuring engineers can deliver quickly while maintaining reliability, security, and maintainability.
Operating within Apollo’s federated delivery model, you will enable engineers embedded within product teams to succeed while maintaining strong technical leadership, shared standards, and a professional engineering community. You will work closely with Digital Enablement leadership to ensure engineering resources are allocated effectively across product priorities.
You will also partner closely with Core Technology leadership to ensure product engineering aligns with platform capabilities and architectural direction, creating clear integration patterns and scalable technology foundations.
A key focus of the role is ensuring data and AI capabilities are central to product development. You will oversee the evolution of Apollo’s data platforms, data pipelines, real time infrastructure, analytics tooling, and machine learning capabilities that power underwriting intelligence.
More broadly, you will champion modern engineering practices, balancing delivery commitments with platform evolution, technical debt management, and sustainable engineering capability development. You will build trusted partnerships across the leadership team and help ensure technology continues to create meaningful business value across Apollo.
