Group Head of Exposure Management

London | Hybrid | Full‑time | Senior Leadership

About Hiscox

Hiscox is an international specialist insurer with a long history of insuring the unique and the complex. We challenge convention, think creatively, and constantly look for better ways to understand and manage risk. Our culture is grounded in integrity, curiosity, and doing the right thing — for our customers, our colleagues, and our business.

If you thrive in an environment that values expertise, originality and continuous improvement, you’ll feel at home here.

The Opportunity

We are looking for a Group Head of Exposure Management to lead our global approach to identifying, understanding, and controlling risk accumulations across the business. This senior role shapes how Hiscox sets its largest risk positions, ensures we maintain a robust and forward‑looking view of exposure, and influences decisions at Executive and Board level.

You will lead a team covering natural catastrophe, cyber, casualty, terrorism, AI and other emerging risks. This role sits within the Underwriting Risk & Reinsurance function and reports to the Director of Underwriting Risk & Reinsurance.

This is a strategic leadership position — not just about producing numbers, but about shaping how the organisation thinks about and manages risk.

What You’ll Do

Strategic Leadership

  • Lead the Group’s exposure management strategy and ensure a “no surprises” risk culture.
  • Own and evolve the Hiscox View of Risk across all material perils.
  • Define and challenge risk metrics, appetite, and accumulation methodologies.
  • Shape the technology and modelling direction for exposure management.
  • Act as the senior interface with Lloyd’s, the PRA, BMA and Group Risk Team.

Frameworks, Models & Governance

  • Set and maintain Group‑wide exposure management standards.
  • Ensure catastrophe risk is appropriately represented in internal and rating‑agency capital models.
  • Oversee vendor model licensing, evaluation, and governance.
  • Chair Exposure Management Groups and EM Managers forums; drive agendas and decision‑making.

Deep Expertise & Insight

  • Prioritise and guide deep‑dive analyses into key exposure areas.
  • Lead research initiatives in partnership with BUs and EMGs.
  • Identify where Hiscox is most vulnerable to outsized losses and drive mitigation strategies.
  • Provide critical input to reinsurance purchasing and capital processes.

Team & Stakeholder Leadership

  • Lead a multi‑peril team of Peril Leads, Senior Analysts and Risk Analysts.
  • Build capability, drive development, and foster high performance.
  • Influence senior stakeholders across Underwriting, Capital, Risk, & Technology.
  • Champion Exposure Management best practice across the Group.

What You Bring

Must‑Haves

  • Extensive experience in exposure management across multiple perils.
  • Deep understanding of catastrophe models, aggregation methods and capital model interaction.
  • Experience delivering in complex environments with strong technical process leadership.
  • Credibility with senior stakeholders and regulators; able to communicate uncertainty clearly.
  • Proven team leadership and talent development.
  • Strong academic background in a relevant field.

Nice‑to‑Haves

  • Experience in casualty exposure modelling or casualty underwriting analytics.
  • Exposure to large‑scale technology or data‑transformation initiatives.
  • Familiarity with rating‑agency and regulatory capital requirements.

Diversity and Hybrid working

At Hiscox we care about our people. We hire the best people for the job and we’re committed to diversity and creating a truly inclusive culture, which we believe drives success.

We have also learned over the past few years that working life doesn’t always have to be in the office, and now it is safe to do so we have introduced hybrid working to encourage a healthy work life balance.

This hybrid working model is set by the team rather than the business to enable you to manage your own personal work-life balance. We see it as the best of both worlds; structure and sociability on one hand, and independence and flexibility on the other.
