Research & Development – Home Care category – Europe Business Unit 

JOB PURPOSE 

The Home Care Business Europe in Port Sunlight is responsible for designing novel and appealing product innovation and renovation (Fabric solutions, Fabric sensations, Home & Hygiene). 

Working in the Home Care Business Unit team, you will be part of a broader world class processing capability, developing and optimising manufacturing processes for the launch and efficient manufacture of the Europe portfolio and Big Bet innovations 

It requires the individual to develop an understanding of scale up principles, in-depth knowledge of manufacturing technology and material-process-product interactions.  

This understanding needs then to be converted into decisions, actions and initiatives that support and deliver the divisional strategy, targets and plans. 

Process Development Engineers are not just technology specialists, but also work as integrators to bring needs from different functions and locations together into one technical solution. RESPONSIBILITIES 

Work independently to deliver a programme to:  

  • Work with international and interdisciplinary teams (R&D, Supply Chain, Procurement, etc.) to scale up and adapt bench-scale processes to pilot and manufacturing scale.  

  • Use process knowledge to help develop and deliver novel products and processes for new consumer offerings and provide strategic supply chain advantage.  

  • Develop process specifications, align with receiving teams and implement at manufacturing facilities. 

  • Deliver training to innovation receiver (Unilever factories team or 3P) 

  • Generate ideas for new products and better ways to manufacture new and existing products. 

  • Generate ideas for end to end manufacturing process optimization. 

  • Devise and execute experimental programs to do and validate successful scale up. 

  • Execute lab, pilot plant and factory trials to start-up new manufacturing processes 

  • Produce product prototypes for consumer testing and for stability studies.  

  • Analyse products and data from pilot and main plant scale to gain process insights and develop digital tools. 

  • Assess feasibility of new manufacturing process in line with current factory capabilities and or support definition of any extra requirement 

  • Generate ideas for Batch cycle time optimization  

  • Identify inefficiencies manufacturing processes, waste management, and complexity reduction and implement improvement measures. 

  • Support capability development workstreams around new technologies and/or new WoW, especially digital tools around data analytics and modelling. 

  • Lead problem solving and troubleshooting activities in manufacturing around Quality, Cost, New/alternative raw materials, and efficiency 

ALL ABOUT YOU 

Experiences, Skills & Qualifications 

  • M.Sc. or B.Sc. in Chemical or Process Engineering. 

  • In depth knowledge of relevant processing equipment principles and practices 

  • Computer literate and digital savvy 

  • Data mining, capture and analytics for problem solving and modelling 

  • Communication and presentation 

  • Project management  

  • Experience with laboratory analysis techniques advantageous 

  • Process safety 

  • Growth Mindset  

  • Must have a “hands-on” approach to pilot plant and laboratory scale-up activities. Need to be able to work in a safe, disciplined manner.
