The role

As our Group Indirect Tax Accounting Manager based at our Head Office in Enderby, Leicestershire, you will manage our end-to-end indirect tax accounting and compliance processes across multiple jurisdictions.

You will make a real difference by ensuring our compliance with UK and international indirect tax legislation, all while maintaining robust accounting processes, strong governance, and effective internal controls. Working closely with colleagues across Finance, the wider business, and external advisers, you will provide technical expertise and support key business change initiatives.

While this role sits within the Indirect Tax team and focuses on VAT, previous VAT experience is not essential; if you have a strong accounting background, NEXT will provide full support and on-the-job training to help you develop your indirect tax expertise.

What you'll take on

  • Prepare the Group's UK VAT return to ensure accurate and timely submission, alongside managing all associated VAT payments.
  • Review indirect tax balance sheet reconciliations and general ledger entries, proactively investigating and resolving any discrepancies in a timely manner.
  • Lead the preparation, review, and submission of overseas VAT and sales tax returns by collaborating closely with local finance teams and external advisers.
  • Prepare and maintain the Group's Partial Exemption Special Method (PESM), monitoring it continuously to guarantee ongoing accuracy and compliance.
  • Manage and build relationships with tax authorities and external tax advisers regarding our indirect tax compliance obligations.
  • Support and enhance the governance framework for indirect tax processes, ensuring robust controls, best practice, and up-to-date operating procedures.
  • Provide essential indirect tax support for finance system implementations, upgrades, process improvements, and audit activities.

What you'll bring

  • A recognised accountancy qualification (ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent) with a strong foundation and understanding of financial accounting.
  • Solid experience in account reconciliations and a track record of maintaining the integrity of financial data.
  • A highly analytical approach with excellent attention to detail, enabling you to identify trends, investigate anomalies, and solve problems effectively.
  • The ability to stay organised, manage competing priorities, and confidently deliver high-quality work to tight deadlines during busy moments in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal and clear communication skills, giving you the confidence to build effective relationships and collaborate with stakeholders at all levels of the business.
  • A motivated, collaborative, and commercially minded attitude, bringing a continuous improvement mindset and a genuine willingness to learn.
  • While not essential, additional tax or VAT qualifications (such as CTA) or previous experience working within a retail or consumer-facing business would be beneficial.
