Our team of award-winning journalists, cutting-edge commercial professionals, and industry-leading digital experts are committed to making a difference and represent a wide range of backgrounds and perspectives. We offer a challenging and exciting environment for career development, with a focus on training, growth and fostering an inclusive culture.

We’re looking for a graphic artist to join our news graphics team to source, design and produce compelling, innovative news graphics.

If you’re excited by the challenge of turning complex information into clear, compelling visuals that reach a global audience, this is the role for you. You’ll join a collaborative, creative team that values curiosity, precision and high journalistic standards, and have the chance to make work that shapes how readers understand some of the most important issues of our time.

This is a permanent NUJ contract.

About the role:

  • Interpret briefs to come up with innovative graphics that evidence, explain and contextualise issues at the heart of breaking news stories.
  • Design and produce a variety of visuals such as charts, explainer diagrams, illustrations, maps and annotated satellite images. Combining a sensitive use of typography with an understanding of composition and house style.
  • Ability to handle simple data effectively, and capable of restructuring data within a spreadsheet.
  • Collaborate with journalists and researchers, championing the role of graphics in the newsroom and safeguarding best practices.
  • Anticipate visuals that might add value to emerging stories and look for opportunities to tell stories using innovative visual formats.
  • Stay abreast of the latest tools and techniques in data visualisation and storytelling.
  • Engage with the evolution of workflows to increase efficiency.

About you:

  • A deep knowledge of visual journalism, with a portfolio demonstrating the ability to create effective data-driven graphics for digital platforms.
  • Basic data literacy and experience with cleaning and restructuring data.
  • Interest in news, domestic, international, financial and environmental.
  • Experience working at pace for a busy website or publication, ideally in the production of breaking news.
  • A portfolio that demonstrates a good understanding of typography and the use of scale, weight and space in composition.
  • An understanding of geography and cartography.
  • A good grasp of data visualisation best practices including the relative effectiveness of different chart types.
  • An awareness of accessibility considerations and the challenges of designing inclusive graphics for broad audiences would be a plus.
  • Ideally you will have a demonstrable ability to bring a diverse perspective to this role.

We actively encourage applications from groups traditionally underrepresented in the UK media.

Please let us know if there are any changes we could make to the application process to make it easier and more comfortable for you. Contact Sean Brinkley  ([email protected]) so we can work with you to support you throughout your application.
